Altered signals due to depth and corrosion

detectorbase

New member
I wanted to split this post up from my conductive/ferrous question. Again, coming from XLT world to Minelab SE, I have to bridge the gap so I can start finding the good stuff with this detector.

In my area Indian Heads/Barbers are in 4.5" - 6" depths usually.. and in 'normal' soil. Nickels and coppers seem to hold up pretty good, but I do get a halo. One edge that I was able to learn with the XLT was how coins would read below what you'd expect for that target.

For example pennies would normally read +70-+80. Nickels normally are in the +20 range, etc. But deep pennies would read at +60 in my area. Deep nickels would read in the +40-+50. I think this is due to the halo or corrosion surrounding the coins. Know this, really increased my finds, and I learned what to look/listen for. That's why alot of these coins are still in my area.. people pass these signals up!

Now, I have the SE. Same area. Same depth of targets, but want to know if similar changes in target input will happen with the SE? If so.. how? Will the tone be 'lower' for deeper coins, or will the high conductive squeek still be present at a Barber dime 6"? Will the smart find target not be in top right.. or display mid range.. or more in the ferrous range?

Thanks again for everyone's advice. I'm excited to get some keepers. The ground is still solid frozen past 4".. but soon it'll be diggin' season again.

At 6 inches coin should be right on and would learn to use both digital number screen and cursor movement screen as you will see a correlation and basically know what your after..Of course add a nail in the hole or perhaps a worn or badly corroded, tilted coin and as good as the Explorer is not going to be right on but after hours in the field you will know the iffies to dig...All in the learning process and going from an XLT to an Explorer again it takes time...
Remember the Explorer is a deep seeker compared to the XLT and at 6 inches is just moderate depth and have gotten silver coins in the 10-12 inch range with ID right on if none of the above conditions are present..

Thanks for your reply! Today, I'll be heading to my 'test' park again. I'll switch between screens. I was primarily running with the SmartFind readout 100% of the time... but I think you're right about understanding what it's telling me with the digital readout. I was so use to using the signagraph on the XLT, that I thought the SmartFind is where I need to be, but I have to take it 'all' in during this learning phase. I'm also planning on using my new 8" SunRay coil, since the park is trashy.. and apparently 'hunted out'. I want to prove that wrong.

Thanks!

I had the XLT and still have the DFX.

With me and the Explorer, I got away from the VDI number pretty quick and started using the Smartfind screen exclusively.

With my SE, a dime at 8" gives a very solid sound. After that, it might start to sound weak/deep but still indicate that it is time to dig.

With the XLT, 6" as you say was about right for solid hits. The DFX was a little better.

The SE is a different animal altogether and I would dig everything that repeats if it even sounds like it might be in the coin range. After a short time you will be able to pretty much know by the sound and smartfind what you are digging.

Thanks for everyone's advice! I just got back from my 'hunted out' park. Did a few things different this time. I went with Iron Mask at 25 instead of the standard disc pattern. I also switched to 8" SunRay coil.

Well... things went good today! I was able to retrieve 3 keepers. A pretty corroded wheat (1919) at 6", 1924 Merc at 5" and a St. Christopher medal at 4".

I thought the iron mask setting really helped get the target into view with out "chirping", "nulling" and resetting so much. The smaller coil was also a real nice switch. Less clutter in the over all sounds during my sweep and pinpoint was way more accurate.

I'll attach a pic.. hopefully I did it right.

Thanks again, I'm excited about this machine!
