Hello to all.

I just bought a whites mxt 300. I have been wanting to look for treasures for a long time and now the time has arrived. I hope i never made a mistake. There is so much to learn its mind bending to say the least. First trip out this evening and found a lot of pull tabs and bottle caps. Did find a couple of dimes and some pennys so it wasnt a complete bust. My question is this, I started out with the coin and jewelery mode and all the preset settings and every time i would find a pull tab or bottle cap the screen would bounce around with just about everything you could find. When I found a penny it would be a little more acurate. I figure its just me but thought I would ask the pros. I know it takes time to learn all the settings and I can see this is where patience comes in. By the way I was using the 4x6 DD. I do have the 12'' coil also. Thanks

Bones,
Welcome. You've got a great machine!! You've come to the right place as there are lots of people on this forum who can help you with questions and info. With a little practice, the MXT will find lots of stuff for you. Personally speaking and what i did was : 1) Re-read the owner's manual from front to back. 2) Set up a test "garden" in your back yard and learn your machine by paying attention to the VDI readouts, confidence blocks and sounds it gives for different coins, bottlecaps, pulltabs, coke cans, etc. 3) I'd then find some target rich spots (parks, ballfields, soccerfields, tot lots etc) in your area to get you going with some on-the-job training. You'll quickly learn the MXT in no time as its very user friendly. Practice and more practice makes perfect and I'm sure you'll be making some posts of nice finds soon. Good luck and hope this helps a little. CCH.

Digging the pultabs and the nickel signals or in that vicinity you'll eventually get that gold ring:detecting:

Well you chose one of the easiest detectors to learn to use so kudos to you. When I first got my MXT, I hunted in the coin and j mode for a long time but kept hearing how wonderful the relic mode was so I switched. It took a few days to get used to it but since I have, I've never gone back to the C&J mode. I love the relic mode so much more. It gives those high, crisp sounds and I believe that it will sound on targets that the C&J won't. Give it a try, trigger forward and you'll learn to love it. You made NO mistake buying the MXT.

Thanks for the response. I will try the relic mode next time out. Well I have all winter to get efficient at detecting so I can go over the hill for gold next summer. Of coarse i will have to get a lot better than today. 2 dimes and 6 Penny's wont go very far. It gets exciting when you think you found something. I know I will get the fever. Thank you all. Bones

I don't think I can say anything more than what's been said you have a great machine the mxt and as with any new detector it just takes a little time and practice to get to knowing it.
If your parks is like the ones around here with lots of pulltabs and foil you're using the best coil the 4x6 that's what I use mostly in the parks the 12" you have would be way to much you only need to use it in open areas like fields or places with very little to no trash.

Nice choice Bones. When I was learning my MXT I stayed in coin/jewelry mode and hunted tot-lots almost exclusively for awhile. Lots of targets, easy digging and consistent ground makes it easier to get in a lot of practice in consistent conditions. You can concentrate on just what your machine is doing and telling you without having to concern yourself with a lot of other factors. JMHO

Big congrats on your purchase of the MXT Bones. Like others, you made a good choice. I've had my MXT for YEARS and I still won't part with it for any other machine. As stated before, I can run with the BIG boys and hold my own with the MXT. I would turn your gain down to around 7-8 if you're not going after the deep targets right now. It won't be near as chatty. Sounds like you're doing good. Thanks and HH, Nancy

I just got an MXT Pro a couple of week ago. I,am sure that you are going to master the MXT in no time. Good luck this winter and keep those visions of GOLD in your dreams for next summer.
