Alright... Nickels? What's your secret?

What's your method of determining nickels from can slaw? I pretty consistently get a 12-14 for nickels. I'm using combined and I double check with 50 CO and target trace. It's been hard for me to distinguish when I'm getting very solid numbers and sounds in all directions. I've noticed that most modern clad that's near the surface also makes a kinda bigger red blotch on the trace as opposed to a nice perfect round red dot on say... Silver or copper. I'll dig those 12-14 signals but 9 outta 10 times it's round slaw or some other garbage? Also I've noticed at a few sites I'm getting a really great sounding/looking 12-43 on pop tops from the late seventies/early 80's. Anyone else get those? Thanks! Happy hunting!

Most nickels I have dug hit the 12-12 to 12-14 but some have bounced to 12-09-12-15 with minimal splatter on the target trace screen with solid audio, ps finally got a war nickel and that hit @12-41 but I have heard they can hit all over the place because of variation of the alloy

Yep my war nickel rang in at 12-16.

Nice work!

Have not had much problems with nickles vs. trash. You might try laying a few nickles on the ground and swinging over them. A nickle has a nice tone and pretty much locks on in my ground which may make the difference because my E-Trac hit on nickles well also. Nickles sound a lot like gold also which is another reason to try and learn that tone. Try raising your coil up 3 or 4 inchs from the target and if the TID starts jumping around that is a good indicator the target is trash. HH :minelab:

Yep, tonal quality is usually better on nickel vs ball of foil or part of tab. Adjacent trash can alter tonal quality though. Bottom line is depending on your site and amount of detecting time you have, you'll have to prioritize your digging based on signals. I had rather have more silver dimes/quarters than nickels anytime.

I got a nickel yesterday. Target had a slight red back ground and a dark cross in the middle of target dot. There was no splatter. Some times it will have red and yellow in target circle but not entirely covering the inside of target dot.

Hope this helps'

mine are 12-12, 12-13, and sound pretty solid from all directions,,,, I also put a high tone to them and it brought me my first two IH nickels

The best advice I can give anyone is to slow WAY down and dig all repeatable audio signals around the nickle range. It WILL pay off! #'s are good but audio always wins!

I have found that any targets from 12-03 through 12-19 when PP tent to give a weak responce when trash. They tend to be can slaw,AU juice foil, pop tops. They don't have the mass a nickel has! Same as a gold ring at 12-11 trash is just weak in PP. I hunt mostly the beach so I still scoop all targets, this is how I came to compare the targets. I have brought this to land and have applyed it as well.Hope this helps all of you.

Nickels bang harder than beaver tails can slaw and foil but i have found nickels that sound just the same as beaver tails so i dig them also anything that hits 12.10 to 12.15 i well dig a lot of gold hits here also.So the big secret is DIG and then you well find nickels. My nickel totals from the one fairgrounds i am working is 85 jeffersons 1 silver 8 buffs 15 v nickels hows your total with the ctx.
