Alright all you Excal users...This STUDENT...needs some good lessons on how to use his new EXCAL 1000

1. Set Discrimination on 1-This knob never gets turned again!
2. Set Sensitivity on around 11 or 12, but never Auto.
3. Volume at 1/2-3/4 turn or whatever's audible for you.
4. Threshold to barely audible humm.
5. Since your areas will more than likely be trashy (iron infested), then you will be running in disc. You will not have to turn this knob either.
6. Now that you have your settings, don't get in a hurry and scan slowly. She likes it low and slow, so giver what she wants and she'll git cha the gold!
7. If you have not water hunted before, then there are some excellent publications available on the subject. Try the goldenolde.com.
Good luck!

Dig everything that does not completely null quiet. If you can get a repeatable signal, then I would dig it. You will eventually be able to tell some targets, by the tone ID, but every now and then you may get fooled. You may have to do some extreme hunting like Martin! Good luck!

That one of the reason's I need a change in detectors, my Whites XLT was not so much a challenge anymore, don't get me wrong I really like it. Its my first love but like the seven year itch you need a change...mine itch only took 3 years,,,LOL

Well jcham and ydnar6, I have spent the better part of a year agonizing over Excal settings for the surf. I believe the unit gets better depth out of Auto. I believe the unit will run smooth in Auto, but at what price? I believe you should run it out of Auto, but at as close to Auto where the threshold is stable and not irratic (for me this is around 10-12). It is still up in the air about the depth advantage between pinpoint and disc. If the surf area is trashy, like a lake or bay, then I run disc. If I am hunting in a clean surf area, then I may opt for pinpoint and check for ferrous null(complete silence) in disc, before digging. Good luck! GH

Being the Excalibur is a waterproof Sovereign I can tell you that manual sensitivity will give the best depth over auto in most cases, but manual may not be as smooth threshold as it is seeing more. Auto will give you a smoother threshold as that is what it is suppose to do, but manual will pick up those deep signals better with maybe a slight blip or threshold change. Those that are new to the Sovereign may want to run auto until you know the tones better, so I do recommend a beginner to run auto, but once you know the Sovereign or Excalibur you will see manual will get you deeper finds. I tell many and show them on some deep target we can get in manual and when they try in auto they will not get a signal until they take it out of auto.

Gulf Hunter is right on on the settings and you do need to work slowly. Here are a few more tips. All BBS type detectors will change threshold tone once a object is found. It may be a high pitch or low depending on what object is. Once it detects a object the threshold tone locks onto that pitch and stays that way till you hit another target. It will also make a null sound if you go over a iron target then return to a low tone. Take a penny and sweep it across the coil(high pitch) then try a gold ring (low pitch). Notice the difference in the tone. It pretty much will stay like that out in the feild.

Happy holidays & HH
