Already regretting my DFX purchase :(

And I haven't even received I yet! My concern is that I got it used with stock 12" spider coil and I'm mainly a coin shooter. Everything I'm starting to read now says the 12" is terrible for coin hunting. Do you think I'll need a new coil off the bat?? I've read a lot about the 6x10 DD coil from Whites and some good regarding the SEF thru Kellyco. Any advice on either of these? Do you think I'm going to really struggle with a 12"? I'm coming from an Ace 250.

The 12" coil is pretty big for coin shooting. Better suited to the dry beach sand or hunting farm fields etc. I like the Eclipse 950 for open, large parks areas, or the Eclipse 5.3 for smaller, trashier areas. The 6x10 DD is a good all around coil but I don't think it pinpoints as well as the concentrics and not quite as deep as the 950.

I think Tom is right on the money.... The 12" has it's applications but a smaller coil is needed for general coin hunting. How small? That depends on how trashy your hunting ground is. Don't give up on the DFX though, it is a coin and jewelry hunter extraordinaire.

I hunt in an old park a lot. Founded in 1891, pretty trashy in several areas. I want to be able to get some good depth since I couldn't get more than about 4" max with my Ace 250. What would be a good recommendation - (1) Whites Eclipse 6x10 DD, (2) Kellyco 12x10 SEF, (3) Kellyco 8x6 SEF ???

The only one on your list for hunting in trash and have depth is the 6X8. Another one not on your list is the 5.3.

i run a ace 250 with sniper coil and if you crank it up it is a four inch coil and it will hit dimes i have buried a 7 inches the little sniper coil for ace 250 is hot good for trashy areas and next to building,s Now i also run XLT a MXT mine lab explorer 2 withes idx fisher id ex cell .The xlt i think runs different coils than dfx but now i have a small 5.3 on it is slick and decent depth, now on to Excelerator Search Coils they don't make them for XLT but do for my MXT and My mine lab they are great coils great depth and separation on my machines i suggest you go 8inch or 6 inch depending how fast you want to move or are you want to cover i suggest a really small one so when you can hardly find thing in a site you hunted out to go back with that it will miss most trash and find thing that have something next to it, don't have dfx but iam in Ohio up north it is hard ground to penetrate but the excelerator i like a lot i like the round ones but they do have oblong ones and i like those to. The 12 inch coil is big i have those and a 15 inch coils for xlt looks like flying saucer on the end of rod.Iam not far from lake Erie and that beach is hard to hunt almost only thing i have is the mine lab will go through and the fisher id excell. hope this helped some good luck to you. Also i would do a search on this forum about the coils you look at to buy and see what other peole have to say.Hope this helps a little and good luck.

Do not sweat it until you try it out first. You may be surprised. The only problem your going to have is getting close to swing sets or fences etc. I would not worry until you try it out first!!! My friend just put one of those on his MXT and found wheat pennies only 1 inch under the surface and he did not have his sensitivity turned down and it pin pointed and ID was right on too. Give it a try first and then decide. Tim

Coin shooting in trashy parks with a DFX and a Whites 5.3 is a super set up.

If you got the unit used, you may be able to sell off the 12 inch to help fund the purchase of a 5.3. A new 5.3 is not too bad of a price. You could also try to trade the 12 inch for a 5.3 on the classifieds. There may be a hunter out there with an extra 5.3 that does not have a 12 inch coil and would want to trade.

If you end up relic hunting in fields, or wet and dry sanding on beaches, the 12 inch coil serves it's purpose.

For trashy park hunting, the 12 inch coil is not the coil you want to use.

As far as regrets go, don't regret getting the DFX. You will do great with it...just gotta get the right coil !

You're getting a great detector so if the 12" coil doesn't work just look for something more suited for your type of detecting.

I understand the DFX has a bit of a learning curve,
but besides that, it's a good machine. White's doesn't make
junk.

I'd keep the coil and buy another one suited for your purpose, coin shooting.
Never can tell when you might want to do some relic hunting or cash hunting.

Peoples taste change.

Good luck.

The DFX is a great detector it takes a little time getting use to but does good. The 8x6 sef or the 6 inch excelerator would work good.

The 5.3 head is deeper than a 2-d head but the 2-D will get in to the trash better and disc out the junk better I believe. The DFX is a killer for jewelry with the dual freq.as it's better than the XLT for that hunting. If you had the 2 side by side you would see the DFX is a little superior in trash to find jewelry. jmho, shortribs, been detecting 42 yrs.Whites are great.

Bought mine almost 3 years ago,the confidence comes with experience, like most have said,a big learning curve, read,do all the videos,..I am a happy and satisfied customer, but again expect to find, have confidence, and go slow, time will slip up on you and you'll look back and say "what was I thinking"what a sweet ride it has been .You made a great purchase..do the homework, and the booty is waiting...good luck, and HH
