Thanks Bill,
I took out the T2 for a test run today. I couln't believe how fast it was. I got my 1st silver of the year (3/4 of a 1945 merc) and 3 wheats out of a pounded park. This park is loaded with trash and iron. My settings were as follows:
Discrimination mode, discrimination 25, sensitivity 65, and tones 3.
My main detector is the Explorer SE with the X-1 probe and I could feel a big difference in weight. The T2 feels very light, is well balanced, and feels solid in your hand. I could have swung it all day with no problem. I used the automatic ground balance and got a 79 reading. I did miss my X-1 probe. Ron gives a free Teknetics probe with the purchase of the T-2 but the probe is not very good. You can barely hear it beep and I had to finally put the dirt in my hand and pass the dirt under the coil to find some of the targets. Next time I'll be bringing my Uniprobe headset. I thought pinpointing might be a problem but it wasn't. This detector has to be one of the easiest detectors to use. The menu setup is very simple and I could actually just lift my thumb up and change the menu settings. I was concerned about the T-2 only having one size coil and I thought it was too big for the real trashy spots. After using it for four hours I can tell you that with some practice the coil will work great in the trashiest areas. This sucker is fast. I was working under a tree and it souded like a machine gun going off under my coil. You could hear the different tones and they were very close together. I got a low tone followed by a crappy high tone hit followed by more low iron tones. I stopped and recheck and I was able to get the numbers in the mid 80's to pop in and out. I decided to dig and at about 6 inches I pulled out a merc that had about a third of it chopped off. I rechecked the hole and I could hear the iron tones. I wish I had asked Mark to check it with his Explorer. We both have pulled silver from under this tree. I got a merc and a buffalo in the same hole a couple of years ago about 4 feet from where this merc was and I know I have grid searched under this tree as has Mark and a few others. Maybe I just hit it at the right angle but I'd like to think that the speed of the T-2 uncovered the merc. With the Explorer and the X-1 probe I can usually get a shallow target out of the ground real quick. I was a getting a little frustrated with the pinpointer I was using and decided to cherry pick for wheat's or silver. I got another wheat mixed in with trash. I decided to hit a wide open part of the park where there is less trash. I increased the sensitivity to 75 and and lowered my discrimination to 15. I got a deep but clear high tone and the numbers were jumping around in the mid to high eighties. I pinpointed and the depth read 10 inches. I pulled a wheat from about 7 or 8 inches. I've learned from experience that when your in these large grassy sections of the park and you hit silver or wheats you need to slow down and work the area well because where there is one you'll usually find some more. About two feet away from the other wheat I got another god hit that read in the mid 80's and I got another wheat at about 6 or 7 inches. I worked the area a little more and finally moved on but I'll be going back to that spot soon. I asked Mark, my detecting partner, to call me over when he found a deep hit. He only called me over a few times but the T-2 heard the targets loud and clear. Next time out I'll be ready with my Uniprobe and I'll be digging a lot of targets to get a feel for the T-2. I can see why Paul says that the T-2 is one of the best relic detectors out there. I think it's going to be a great coin machine too. Normally I'll buy a detector and try it out for awhile and then I'll go back to my Explorer. Time will tell how this machine works out for me. So far it's looking real good.
