currently, I use a Garrett xl 500 and am looking to get another detector. I've been reading up on several detectors and am now totally confused with all the latest technology. May I get feedback on detectors that you've used that are exceptional for wet sand, fine gold jewelry, and waterproof to at least twenty five feet. My guess is the Infinium but am not sure about the salt water discrimination as my xl seems just as sensitive, are others better?

I use an Minelab Excalibur 1000 in the wet sand. It's waterproof down to 200 ft and is unaffected by saltwater. Others will tell you to go with the Fisher CZ-20. I've heard that this is a good machine as well. Corners were cut when making the the Excalibur. It's heavy and not balanced very well, but that shouldn't make much difference if you're in the water a lot. The headphones on mine weren't very good so I bought a pair of waterproof Gray Ghosts and had them connected. I also got a straight shaft made for it to balance it a little better. All said, it's a good machine. The Excalibur is not too keen on the thinner gold items, might want to look at a Tesoro Tiger Shark for that stuff if that's your main area of focus.

If you are looking for a PI machine the Tesoro sandshark is a good choice. I have one and very satisfied with it. There is alot of choices of PI machines and everyone has their opinions for different reasons.Whites,Garrett, etc seem to good PI machines.
Good Luck

If you live in Hawaii you should ask Terry or Crank because they live there. From what I have heard Excalibers don't work there to well because of interference. Terry or Crank would be better equipped to give you an opinion on which machine they use or prefer before you make your investment to buy a machine for that area. JMHO HH

Hello, I am planning a trip to Maui in may and would like to get some info about some of the places to water hunt. Also looking for a buddy for the diving with my hookah rig . I am also thinking of bringing my Hookah or floating surface air supply. Thanks for the help. If I am doing this forum wrong please advise, this is my 1st time.

Most of the guys I have seen in the water use the Excalibre or the CZ20 although I have seen the Whites water machines as well.
I personally own a 1280X which has done me well and I use it in fresh water at home. Can't afford to have one machine for salt and one for fresh water. Now if I lived in Hawaii, well .........
On Maui, I stayed in Kihei and generally detected the beaches south from Kam I down to Big Beach in Makena. There are access parking areas near some of the upscale hotels down south in Wailea. If you are in Kihei, stop at a small local business called FansEtc. The owner Eric is a great guy who I got to detect some beaches with over two stays. If you do say Aloha from Gord in Canada.

Hello Firefly!

I am in Honolulu, I am new to this MD'ing but I have seen other people on the beaches, it seems that the White's SURF PI PRO is the detector of choice around here. But there are many others you can use, I use a Tesoro "SAND SHARK" and I am very happy with it so far. Seems to do the job well, but I am still in the learning phase. The excalibur is also a good machine but kind of pricey for me. PM me if you want to chat or get together sometime.
