Aloe Vera Gel....

Pete in MI

New member
Something to keep handy. I went detecting yesterday (5/3/07) on a site that has once been the location of one of the oldest hotels in my little town.

Had a great time detecting for about 3 or so hours. Mostly junk and a few coins. Got home and decided I better cut the grass. Since the lawnmower hadn't been used all winter and had set outside it took longer to get it running then get the grass cut..about another hour or two outside.

Maybe you're wondering what this all has to do with Aloe Vera Gel?

I wore a hat all day - both detecting and working on the lawn and mower. It was a beautiful sunny day...and I forgot one important thing...sunburn!

My neck was extremely red and by the time half the grass was cut I could feel the burning heat in my neck from the sunburn. Forgot to use suntan lotion on myself all day yesterday.

I tried rubbing alcohol to help cool down the burning. It worked a little. Didn't want to put any cremes or lotions on the burn otherwise it would trap the heat in and cause more damage to the skin and cells below.

We have a big jug of Aloe Vera Gel and my wife said it would cut the heat. At that point I was too hungry and burning to care what she put on my neck. The gel went on and felt icy cold - it had been sitting at room temperature. I put more on before going to bed and again this morning. Right now I don't feel any burning and had I not used the gel I am sure I would be in total misery this morning.

So as a suggestion, get some Aloe Vera Gel and keep it on hand for those time you forget to use or don't have sunscreen and you have a nasty sunburn.

We picked up some Hawaiian Tropic Aloe Vera Gel- Blue Ice with Lidocaine in it to deaden the pain. We bought it at Kmart. It feels like you rubbed on air conditioning then the Lidocaine kicks in. Sorry about your burn.

we have to be careful of...sun burn, cuts, animal and insect bites, heat exhaustion, etc.

My neck feels pretty good right now and had I not used the Aloe Vera Gel I'd be pretty miserable. Thought that telling others might get them thinking about what they need to consider when detecting beside the detector, batteries, pouch, digging tools, pinpointer...a first aid kit might just be something to keep in the vehicle - just in case.

Summer gets too hot...maybe I should fill a swimming pool with the gel...then it would be 'very cool'.

I'm in Mississippi, which is like living in the Sahara except the humidity is 99% instead of 2%. I use Hawaiian Tropic SPF 45, yes that's FORTY-FIVE, waterproof moisturizing sunblock. And I have to reapply it about every other hour.
For those times that I miss a spot I picked up some Banana Boat Aloe AfterSun gel. I got it at either Kmart or WallyWorld, and it really works great. Prevents peeling, cools the burn, doesn't stick or stink and pretty cheap for a 16oz bottle.
Between the heat, humidity, bugs, snakes, bugs, sunburn, bugs, sweat pouring off me and the bugs, I basically have the opposite seasons for detecting that the yankees have. My best hunting is October through March, giving up 2-3 weeks in late January or early February for the cold. By the middle of May I've hung it up. I believe today was my last outing unless we get a short weather break. It's the same with my astronomy hobby, too hot and buggy to be outdoors even at 3am or some other unGodly time. So basically I cocoon in summer and get out in the winter, not the other way around.

and do some detecting. All the snow and frozen ground makes it hard to detect up here. We don't have much in the line of snakes to worry about but bugs are a 'pest' - ticks, deer flies, mosquitos, spiders, etc.

Sounds like time for researching future sites where you are at. Hope you find some good places to detect when the season comes around again for you.

HI

That stuff works good.I have been told that you can get the ALOE VERA PLANT,and cut of the stem and sqeeze the gele out,and rub it on your skin.I have found out that the gele thats in the stem is stronger than what comes in a bottle.
