I noticed a friend of mine chatting with my neighbor who was working on his lawnmower. I had mentioned to my friend that I was getting another detector and that he could come out detecting with me sometime, so I brought the AT Pro over to show him. Anyways, as I was showing them where the batteries went, the battery cover slipped out of my hand and onto the sandy ground. And before I could say "no, wait" ... my neighbor decided to blow the sand off the cover and O-ring with starting fluid !!!! I could have killed him right then and there !! Now, I'm not sure what the consequences of that are. I brought it home and rinsed it under warm water to get the "redneck juice" off of it. I'm thinking that it needs to be re-lubricated now. The o-ring looks OK though. . Some people just don't think before they act ... flipping idiot !!

Yup, a little silicone grease is in order!

Could've been worse, had he used MEK or acetone it might have been ugly.

Cant blame the person, He thought he was doing you a faver??? How do you think befor you do something if you dont know what to thing about??? If he new what to think about he would have thought not to do that , Think about that LOL!!!! good Luck to you , Mickfin

Ether evaporates so quick, that I do not think it did any damage...If the O-Ring does not rub off black on your hand when you run your finger over it, it should be OK...just make sure all the sand is gone, and relube the O-Ring with silicon plumbers grease.

HH,

Hah! Maybe have him do your lawnmowing as punishment, that way, you can get in more swing time for yourself!

Left hook and a right upper cut for your neighbor:rofl: I bet you got some Redneck juice around your house Dave,, B careful:thumbup:

Oh I'm pretty sure I got a can somewhere in my garage  .... We do have rednecks up in Minnesota for sure ... my brother says that I am, because he still lives in Boston. MA ... where I moved away from 20 years ago. Except that I prefer to call the ones up here "Swamp-billies" ..

:punch: Are you positive it was starting fluid and not carb cleaner or something with acetone, tolulene or some other highly corrosive substance? If you had to rinse "redneck juice" off, it wasn't simply starting fluid. If you have any doubts at all, get a new one. Water in your detector is an anathema. That o-ring is cheap and easy to replace.

Just went and looked at the can ... it's carb cleaner :veryangry: .... he feels pretty bad about it and is willing to pay for a whole new battery cover. Not sure how to go about ordering a new one or if that is even something that Garrett sells individually. Either way, it's not going under water until I get a new one.

Ask Garrett. They are awesome; you will probably have your answer in seconds. I bet the cover is fine, but the o-ring is surely toast. This should be an easy fix. :wiggle:
