I started searching the bank of a shallow ditch early this morning and the first target I dug right off was a 45 Washington quarter. The shallow ditch was on one side of a good sized lot, probably 150' x 75,' so my expectations were high for the remaining ground. After working my way to the end of the ditch I noticed a culvert and just inside the culvert was a black and white cat...that upon closer inspection turned out to be a skunk. It didn't seem to be paying me any attention, but none the less, I moved over to the other side of the lot and started hunting that edge. In short order, I dug several clad dimes and quarters and 2 wheaties when I just happened to glance over my shoulder and noticed about 15' behind me was the skunk and he was eyeballing me pretty good. I slowly eased my way down to one end of the lot in order to give the skunk plenty of space. Unfortunately, it apparently felt the lot was his, or hers, and pretty much camped itself right in the middle of the lot. Ultimately, the vast majority of the lot remains to be searched. I'll go the extra mile for a piece of silver, but not if I have to tangle with a skunk for it. Hopefully it will be gone by my next trip to the lot. HH jim tn
