alluvial gold hunting machine...

If you were to hunt for gold in rivers,
no land hunting, no hunting for coins or relics, just river exploration to id a good area to pan which detector would you use?

Hi Landman

Mate i would be gettin a Goldbug2 and use a 6" sniffer coil dipped in epoxy resin to waterproof it
and that would find the tinniest of tiny gold for ya..

Pete in WA :smoke:

I'd use the MK1 eyeball to read the river looking for low pressure areas then test with a pan.

I would use the goldbugpro and map out area's of high black sand concentration.A mxt or gmt could do the same thing-but cost alot more and not nearly as light.
In all-metal mode its hits small stuff. Not as small as the GB2 but Its a hell of alot lighter, cheaper and has that meter to help trace black sand Also in all-metal it has a constant ground readout that woul tell you roughly the amount of black sand.

You cant go wrong with the goldbug2 also.It will find the smallest flakes of gold.

Biggest problem with using a Metal detector designed for LAND operation in the stream iss tempature instability and lots of falsing , coil bouancy is another issue. Although I did find some gold it took lots of patience and I just figured out that sniping was a better way to go.
Hope this helps. Good luck and find a biggin!

As rockpup1 said you should look for a detector that gives you a digital readout of ground mineralisation. My MXT did it and with a waterproof coil I can accurately track the black sand deposits in the creek beds.

For a demonstration of this method check out a video on Youtube called "Finding Gold V" posted by Matt Mattson user name Flagold. A very informative video series if you want to learn even more. however once you become more experienced and learn where the gold will sit in flowing water, You will know where the black sands are without the use of a detector. Good luck

rockpup1... "following the black sand" could, and does, lead to new areas.
I'm listening and learning. Can you give us more thoughts and information, and especially examples...

Hi beepinpete wa... The gold bug 2 with the 6-inch sniffer handles finds the tinest specks for sure.
Never thought of dipping it in epoxy resin to water proof it... Thanks:)
