Here is a photo of a burrowing owl sitting on top of our mail box. They are about 10" tall and dig burrows in the ground as their nest. This little guy has a girlfriend who is busy digging deeper as he watches out for danger and hunts food ... insects, small mammals, snakes, etc.
Burrowing owls are protected here and are our city's official bird. If you buy property here you can't build a house or disturb the nest or area around the nest from beginning of nesting season (late Feb)until after the chicks are hatched and fly away (July / Aug).
These guys "decorate" around their nest to supposedly make it look abandoned ... by picking up small pieces of trash and scattering it around the nest.
During the nesting season, they delight in dive bombing me and our dogs as we take the dogs for a walk. My dogs are certain the owls must taste like chicken.
