I have a 2004 Canadian penny that is attracted to a magnet. I know that Canadian pennies were at one time copper and then in the 1980 or 1990s debased the allow to something less expensive like perhaps zinc like the USA did.

Do any of you know if the contents is steel or nickel? My guess is steel since I think nickel is just as or more expensive than copper.

My price guide shows a bronze-plated steel made in 2002, but 2003 forward should be bronze-plated zinc.

They use steel as they rust when in the dirt too long.
Nickel is more expensive so they use the cheapest possible material.

There's serious talk of the :canadaflag: pennie being done away with.
