All Metals Mode ?

grumpy

New member
I have a question about the GT and the all Metals Mode switch and function;
I have been running a GT a couple of years now but been down a few mo. with the crud, maybe I forgot something? I have never used the all metals I always use IM on. and the toggle to pinpoint with the sens to auto and the two disc and notch to 0.
The last couple of days I have been re reading the book and decided to try the all metals mode today at a school in town.
I turned the machine on as I usually use it and checked the meter 180 on a quarter 8 inch sunray coil and everything is good. I switch the toggle to All metals and the other toggle to track. The noise changed and the target action on the machine went totally wrong. I pumped the coil up and down a bit and the treshold just audiable and swept over the quarter laying on the ground. The sound was not what I expected but harsh and unstable, The number on the meter was way off like 125 and jumped to 108 and all around the area of those numbers but nothing close to 180 or nothing staying stable on the quarter. What gives I came home and re read the book again and cant see where there should be this problem.
The only thing I could think of might be the machine has to be off to switch to the All metal mode then turned on???? I would not think so but dont know. When I switch back to IM on or IM off the machine works fine????
Sorry for the unusual and probally dumb question but Im at a loss. I really hate to think the thing needs to go to LV for a transfusion (again)
Thanks for the help

Hi Grumpy,

First off the meter can not be used in all metal for IDing as it is for disc only so all you are seeing with the numbers is the intensity of the signal, not much change is deep while big change is surface which we can tell just by the sounds. I don't like the all metal myself and find the way you were using it in disc is the way I recommend it to those new to the GT. Now once a person is experienced with it then I tell them to run manual sensitivity and leave the other setting the same as you are doing it.
Now if you want to run all metal I would track it as I don't like the sounds in track and then go to lock so it don't vary, cant use the meter and if you want to check out a signal just switch to disc with iron mask on as you will be able to ID that target.

Good luck

Myself for my hunting of old park, ballfields and school yards and some privite yards I find I get my best performance and good ID with the IM on over all metal. I also feel I get more depth too as many signals I get with the iron mask on I dont get when i go to all metal to pinpoint.
With the Sovereigns I find my deeper targets when I go real slow and listen for the threshold tones to change, then try to get the tones to repeat and and start climbing a bit. These will be small area is why you have to real slow so the GT has time to see them. I go slow for normal hunting and if I know this area has given up some good targets deep I will slow way down more to hear the deep small one. In all metal I would be digging way too many signals that are small trash and possibly miss the good ones IM on would see.
