An argument for all metal.
Have done a bit of testing (in air) with several machines. Was primarily interested in target masking and discrimination. What I found has made me rethink my own hunting technique. I used a thin iron, back packing, tent peg and placed it beside, then on top of and then a slight distance from a quarter. With the machine
 
Target masking when using discrimination is a big problem..We loose a lot of good targets because the detector doesn't see the coin....

I have found discrimination kills the separation of iron and non iron targets. Believe it or not, I have found that after a while, you can ear discriminate different types of ratty signals. After a bit of practice, you can get pretty good at the ratty ones that are non iron, and the ones that are strictly iron. I have pulled a lot of good targets that way, but also lots of nails too. Until something better comes along, dig some of those iffy targets.
