hello all. frank and i headed out this morning to detect the edges of this massive beanfield on a farm we've been going to lately. the carved up and holed barber dime was my first hit of the day. after another hour of fruitless hunting, i headed to the woods. it's a good thing i did. a light rain started to fall, and got heavier by the minute.
i went back to the area where we found the rifle pits a couple of weeks ago, swinging right along, when a manhattan sized beep 'pert near blew the headphones off my head. thinking it was just another beer can, i almost didn't dig it. i figured, "what the heck. it's raining and there's nothing else hitting." i'm glad i dug it now. thirty bullets and fifteen percussion caps came out of the same 8" hole. many of the bullets still have the powder in them! here it is, raining like crazy, it seemed to take forever getting all 45 pieces out the hole! i had to hurry, not wanting to get the machine too wet, and get back to the truck. i did a quick sweep of the area, looking for the boxplate that might be there. i know there's still a couple of perc caps left in the hole. we'll get them when we go back there this week.
it looks to be the contents of a yankee's bullet pouch. some of the bullets aren't patinated too well, sticking together in clumps in the ground. no boxplate yet, but you never know... thanks for reading, and hh!
