All I know is that it's a bullet........

Parkit

I'm not really a relic hunter, this turned up in a park in the next town over. This is Northeast Mississippi, plenty of Civil War activity around where the bullet was found, but can anyone tell me anything more about it? It has 3 sets of the 3 grooves around the bottom, doesn't look fired to me but what do I know.

Thanks for any help,

Hi Steve,
Indeed, you have a bullet. Most likely a .577-.579 caliber for the common "58" caliber rifle or rifled musket; standard issue of most CW infantry. It does appear to have been fired due to the smearing of the 3 grooves (rings as they are mistakenly referred to). Probably fired from a long distance due to the lack of distortion to the lead. The cavity or base is what we refer to as a "plug base." Nice find, David@Dixie

Thanks! I guess I'll stick it back with my other "didn't expect to find one of these" finds. I appreciate the info VERY much!

looks like a 54 cal mini probly from a mississippi musket
