Can you get any shots like this with a smaller point and shoot 8 mp camera? I would like to take some pictures like this too, but do I need to spend a lot of money too do this? Thanks in advance Chris

I think the photos on this forums use just about every type of camera in existence. Most are likely digital and many of those are Point & Shoots (P&S) ... as well as DSLR's.

If you're talking about Tom's bird photos in the previous post, then you probably will need a longer telephoto lenses and DSLR with interchangeable lenses which can be fairly expensive (although prices are coming down all the time). However, for many shots a Point & Shoot (P&S) can work quite well and can be a lot more reasonable on the pocketbook. Most P&S's do a pretty good job with macros as well.

As a rough example, all the "photos" in the following link were made with an older 5M pixel Canon A95 P&S. Not saying they're as good as a DSLR but - in my opinion - they do show that you can get okay results with a P&S.

Best way to get good photos is to learn whatever equipment you own and get out there and use it. Also I'd recommend learning some basic post processing skills as that is often overlooked by many people.

Good luck!

Chris, my first digital camera was a Fuji 2mp that I got free from Staples for buying a upgrade for windows xp. I loved the camera and then bought a Fuji S5000 which I loved as well. Most any digital camera today (especially Canon and Nikon) wheather P&S or SLR will give you great results. You can buy P&S in a range of focal distances. The camera I use is a Nikon D70 and by todays standards is a old camera. Used, with a kit lens for around $400.00 to $500.00. I hope to upgrade soon but lately I haven't taken enough pictures to justify the expense. Here is a website to explore the different cameras and ratings for them.

Also this site will show the everyday pitctures from the average person for most any camera out today and the past..

Thank you for the fast response . I have been taken digital pictures since the Nikon 995 came. When the Nikon 950 went half price.
