Alkaline / Lithium batteries

Hi, all. I've been watching and reading for a short while now. It's very encouraging to see all the great responses from people who have the MXT Pro. I've owned my MXT Pro for maybe close to a month now and have only been out three times. I've found $.11 in clad and numerous pull tabs. Being brand new at this hobby, it seems like there's an ocean of infomation to soak up. After reading my manual a couple of times , I've decided I need to read it even more and even take it to the field with me. I've noticed in the manual that it recommends alkaline batteries. But, under that it says that if one uses other than alkaline batteries, the life of the batteries would be less. My question : Can lithium batteries harm my detector? Anybody here with this experience?
I live in the northwest corner of Illinois ( Rock Island, Moline area ) about an hour and a half from Peoria. Nancy, can you give me some info on your metal detecting classes? Thanks. ><>

Lithium batteries will work fine but for the average person, they are very expensive per hour of use though. The best buy for batteries are the sale priced alkalines IMHO.

Look up the Iowa, Illinois Treasure hunters club and join it, a great club based in the Quad cities and that club will be our guests at our Spring Club hunt later this month near Peoria. Yea Nancy, how about those classes of yours? I thought I was your only student? :twodetecting:

I really hate people who take off those tabs from cans!!!! I too find hundreds. They come up at 24% and tab/ring on mine, I just keep walking. I hope you enjoy your new toy. I have had my MXT PRO for 3 weeks and already have 3 coffee cups full of pocket change, a ring, charms, and bullets. Swing on.....

Welcome boneykid. Keep at it. It will start to make more and more sense pretty quickly. Once you make a good find or two you won't be able to get enough. That's when it starts to get real fun and you learn more even quicker . . .pretty much every time out. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum. As others have answered you question on the batteries, I'll begin to say that I do not teach "classes" on the MXT per say, I have taught CSI about retrieving targets, etc. If you're interested in a Club, check out what Larry suggested. Check into the I & I Club. http://iandithers.ning.com/?xg_source=msg_mes_network There's a lot of really nice people with a good membership. It's very close to you.

Thanks all, for your responses. I'm now waiting for a response from I&I Treasure Hunters social network to see if they accept my application. If they let me in, I'm going to join their club. Thanks, Nancy, Larry (IL) and everyone else for the info and encouragement. I got a very good deal on ebay for 100 Energizer lithium batteries. Our Mac's mouse seems to eat batteries very quickly, so I snagged the lithiums. I figured with an expiration date of 2024, they were a good deal. Thanks again. Kevin ><>

Boneykid, If they don't get back to you, contact Steve at wizard@mchsi.com He's been a member of the I & I for years. He's a great person to know and a personal friend. I hope I don't get my butt chewed out for giving it to you. You'll love the club and won't have a long drive as the PATH Club. Hey, we might see you at the end of the month with our camp out and hunt. I & I are invited to hunt with us. :))))

Speaking of batteries, could I ask some dumb questions? Can rechargeables be used in the MXT? Aren't there some new Sanyo or Ray-O-Vac ones that last a lot longer? Couldn't these be recharged using one of those discarded stick in the ground walkway solar lamps? Are there any better solar chargers for this? Just curious and would really appreciate any reply. Thanks. James

Yes, rechargeable batteries can be used in the MXT. I use to use them but they get a bit heavy at times. Also after recharging over and over, they don't hold a good charge for long. I just stick with the cheap store brand alkaline batteries. It's proven they are the same quality and last as long as the higher priced brands. HH, Nancy

The problem with rechargeables with the MXT is the voltage needs 10+ volts for best operation. You may notice that the MXT gets a little noisier when the voltage gets below that although it is still operational. A rechargeable pack will charge above 10 volts,, but will stabilize at 9.2 volts (1.2 X :geek:. The trick to using a rechargeable pack is to add an extra cell to the pack. Rob (IL) made a post a couple years ago on how to do that if someone wants to look that up in Search. Unless you hunt a lot, sale price alkalines are the way to go.

I think there are some new rechargeables on the market that are rated a higher voltage now. It seems like 1.6 volts each?? I don't know how expensive they are and I'm sure they will take a special charger.

Thanks Larry that's very informative. One thing that sort of bothers me is all the trash batteries I'm generating. I don't know if there's a way to recycle these or if they just wind up as more pollution. James
