Anyone know what it indicates when you get an audio alert in one direction across a target but not in the other? This question was asked once before but don't think I ever saw a definitive answer. Is that some sort of masking?

If its the Ace 250 it can mean that its not a good target. It can also be
a coin standing on end.

You just have to try pinpointing and digging to see what it is.
Katz

Where is the dang thing!

Thanks Katz. I've had numerous of em and have just been putting them down as junk. Soon as my new pro pointer gets here I'll try chasin a few of em down.

Audio alert? What mode you running? What Target zone is alerting? I would imagine your in the coin mode and whatever your discriminating against is right next to a target your accepting. When you get a one way beep set you machine on all metal and try. You just might get a coin - iron beep one way then an iron - coin beep the other? No matter what like Katz said you'll have to dig it up and see. Try opening up the iron notch when your in the coin mode. This can give you more info if somethings being masked by iron. Also sweep from different angles. Even tilting your coil can give you some added info.

You're probably passing up good targets. Don't depend on the machine for everything as no ID on any machine made is ever 100% accurate. A little thinking comes in handy along the way.

In most cases I've found that a one way signal is something that is notched out...iron or pull tabs or a rusty nail. I don't recall ever getting a good target with one of those and i dug a lot of them in the early days.

MrGee

Yeah another one by old Chubby Checkers. HAA. But it works like a charm. The Minelab boys call it "wiggling."

Actually, Khouse, I had gone into the A/M mode with those one way signals and yes I was getting a iron/coin in one direction and coin/iron in the opposite direction after I switched modes. The problem is I didn't know what the MD was trying to tell me and assumed it was another trash target similiar to when it starts bouncing all over without even having changed modes or sensitivity. I had also suspected it might be some sort of masking which is why I asked the question. So I probably have missed a number of good targets on those one way signals. I also tried the wiggle/twitch (still in coin mode) but it didn't change the indications I was getting. So....taking into account what you have said, it could be a question of masking or as Uncle Willy has said, it could be a coin being on edge--maybe both. Then again, MrGee says in his experience, those one way signals usually turned out to be trash. Just best to dig it up and see. Wonder how many indian heads I've left behind. In any case, everyone's comments are appreciated. Every little bit helps. Bit by bit I'll get there.

Sometimes by the time you use all the techniques to figure out if it's a good or bad target - you could have already had it dug. If you have the time that's when you can dig iffy targets. If you have only a little time then pass on them. If it's a site that I have access to anytime. I will cherry pick the first pass. Then each time I hunt I'll decrease the disc and also start digging the iffies.

Pinpoint signal stomp ground on pinpoint area this usually breaks deep object loose like a small earthquake to the item. Then re swing should have different reading.

Yeah the best and 100% discriminator is still your digging tool. Back in the beginning before discrimination was even heard of one had to dig everything so one missed nothing.

When I get multiple signals and one of them sounds like a coin, it usually is and there's some junk object within a few inches. It's been so long since I have been metal detecting, I will probably have to re-learn all this stuff. I did charge my batteries up the other day, just in case.

Reading these posts and seeing all the great finds and the "Ring Master", John sure makes me want to get out and try to find something. 4 rings in one day, what a nice find. I forgot how to do the twitch, tho. Guess I'll hit the search box and see if I can find it. Isn't that when you swing real fast for a short distance over the target? Back and forth?

Yeah too many folks spend too much time analyzing the target when they could have had it recovered and on to the next target.

Bill

Center the target side to side, forwards and backwards then whip the coil rapidly over the target back and forth a couple of inches each way. Since it's a motion detector the faster you move the coil over the target the better it discriminates and the deeper it goes. Just the nature of the beasts.
