Airplanes and Metal Detectors?

Thinking about going to Florida next month for a three day weekend.
If I brought the detector would the airlines give me a problem.
It would be a carry on item. Wouldn't trust it any other way.
Daughter lost laugage before and when she finally got it someone went through it.

Help

Many suggest to carry on the control box only with batteries removed. Then pack(check)the batteries, rod, and coil which are now useless to anyone to steal.

Call the airlines or the TSA and then let us know what you learn.

I was told to always have the batteries with the machine in case you had to prove to them that it actually is detector and show them it works, but no a soul has ever even questioned what it is. I think it happens often enough that they know what they look like now. Just the same, I would carry batteries with, just in case.

If you are flying domestically there shouldn't be any problems, I flew from Canada with one post 911 no real problems. I just made sure that the control box (CZ5) was in my carry on with the coil also, and the batteries were not in the device.

I also wrote a note and put it with the detector telling them what it is and what it is for. They wrote back and thanked me for leaving them a note. (On the same note) They were very nice about it.

I travel nationally for my job. i have taken my Garrett GTAx550, Garrett Infinium, DetectorPro HH Diver and my Minelab Quattro without issue or any specail procedures. I leave the batteries in, TSA may want to see it work to make sure it is a detector. I have had them open my bags and look inside without issue. The only thing they dont like is metal digging tools. I bought three composite digging shovels from a Black and Decker outlet store for 5 bucks and take these on in my carry on. I also take a plastic grain scoop or ice scoop with holes drilled in it for the beach without issue.

Good Luck.

Just didn't want to sneak off to Florida and not get a few hours of fun in.
Now it's just finding a date to go..

Thanks again

Bruce

Hi Guys,
On another forum a fellow told me that Detectors or rather Detecting was illegal in Mexico. Can anyone else confirm this? I was hoping to be able to hit the beach(TigerShark) at Rocky Point,Sea of Cortez after spring break.

Thanks and a great site,

Ron

...and I can tell you that carrying on a metal detector control housing and coil will not be a problem. TSA Screening personnel see ALL types of electronics coming through their equipment everyday. Just think about all the portable DVD players, ipods, CD players, laptops, etc. that come through the checkpoints everyday. As long as they (TSA Screening personnel) can see through the electronics with their screening equipment, it isn't a problem.
