Airplane finally asembled!

Yes, good people, I've finally managed to get that thang together. I left the wheel pants and some of the cover plates off for the FAA inspection, so the plane should be airworthy by the time by flyin' partner Dr. Gill comes back from Arizona in mid-March. This may be the last plane I'll build -- dunno how many planes I have left in me at my age. I've built two of my own plus helped make five others, and none of them have fallen out of the sky yet!

thanks, Frank for posting a pic of the finished project......love the color you chose <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

I know you'll enjoy flyin' it. My hat is off to you. Something like that is TOTALLY beyond my reach. Why, I have a hard time just keepin' my '74 Honda CT90 running correctly. (Right now it's not!)
When you get to flyin' it, have one of your buddies fly along side you and snap a photo sos we can see Sky King in action once again! <><

have any of those ear flaps and goggles? <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> This is really nice, but I sure would be scared in one. I have a very big fear of heights! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

John, it will take a while to get it into the air, but I'll get another pilot to snap a few up close pix, hopefully unlike like this fuzzy one another pilot took of my first project, a flush-riveted metal motorglider I built in 1986. That's me flying 120 MPH near 14,414 foot Long's Peak. Dunno if I ever posted that picture before..?? This new plane should attain about 17000 feet as an absolute ceiling. It oughta be great fun, and the bird should burn less than three gallons per hour at cruise speed ,which is a slow 75-80 MPH. Good sightseeing plane.

Yeah, Butch -- if someone flys into me they can't claim they didn't see it!

have paid off again I see. I think you were working on this plane when I first came to the forum.
She sure is pretty. Does it have a name yet?

and beautiful. Interesting that its a pusher and not a puller. Must have different gliding characteristics huh? And attitude? Are there any differences in air flow to the prop during maneuvers?
Wayne

Wayne, it has some aerodynamic characteristics that are unusual, at least for pilots trained in tractor-type aircraft: The thrust line is high, so the nose will pitch down slightly when the throttle is opened and pitch up when it's closed. Airflow around the fuselage is pretty clean on my plane because I carefully faired the doors into the fuselage and designed a few vortex generating strips where needed to reattach any errant flow. The Challenger slips better than any airplene on the market. Too well for inexperienced pilots, who find that unnerving! I've added Lexan tip plated to the horizontal stabilizer to give more fin area. Visibilty is awesome because the pilot sits ahead of the leading edge of the wing -- almost like a helicopter! -- Ol' Frank

I probably named it a few choice words at times when things refused to go together as planned! The name "Homesick Angel" sound about right, because these Challengers will outclimb most factory-built light planes!
