Airline travel and metal detectors

I am planning a trip this summer and hoped to take a metal detector along. I wondered if anyone has traveled lately with a machine and could share their thoughts. I wondered about carrying it on? I know the sizes have changed lately but wasn't sure if I could knock the unit down enough to carry it on. I guess I could always just carry the box on and send the rest through luggage. I can imagine a metal detector could freak security out. You could take the batteries out and send it through xray, I just don't want the shock of baggage or the chance of theft from baggage. Please let me know what you may have discovered.

I have not had a problem with Continental or Southwest..
As long as you can break it down and fit it in your carry on then it is ok but you might have to spend more time going thru security:stars:

I've done it a couple of times. I've never did it as a carry on though. I usually put everything in one bag (diggers, batteries, etc) and leave a note on top (contents: non-powered metal detector / spare batteries and digging tools), inside the luggage along with my cell number. I actually got a "thank you" note back one time. If I'm checking it in, before it goes through the x-ray machine, I give them a little heads up. I think they appreciate it. Wires, batteries and things that look like knives probably make them nervous :) Take the machine apart and make sure there are no batteries in it. You'll be fine.

I think taking it as a carry on might be an issue though.

I think what I will do is just carry the main unit in a carry on without batteries. I will send the coil, rods, etc through with baggage.
I will also plan on arriving early and giving them a heads up.

Thanks, Don

I took my CZ70 from CA to NY last year and I took the control unit on my carry-on everything else in my check-in (mainly because my Lesche probably would get confiscated by TSA as a knife if I tried to bring it as carry-on).

TSA never balked an eye at the CZ-70 when it went through their x-ray machine.

Brian
