Air testing the 3D

UKman

New member
I have been doing some tests with my 3D on gold,i know nasa tom says not to in advance mode.So i tried the salt mode first then tried the advance just to see how they compared.
First i tried a half sovereign 22ct,passed it over the disc (disc set at 6) and no response. So set disc to 5,again no response.Set the disc to 4,and still no response.Eventually got a double high pitch beep on disc 3,i did the same test in advance and got the very same result.
The second test was with an 18ct gold chain, must be a few ounces of gold chain.I did the same test as above in both advance and salt, and got the same result.Only got a response in disc 3.Even though the chain is a big lump of gold.
I also did a quick test on a tab,i only got a response on disc 2 (foil) a mid tone.Which i think is normal,if i read nasa toms article right.
So can any of you more experienced cz owners tell me if this normal,as it seems i would be unlikely to find any gold if the disc is set above 3.
Thanks for your time, and good luck to you all. UKman

If you disc. out anything above iron you risk loosing gold jewelry as it can appear in any of the facets and a real small gold chain might even come in as iron as they are hard to get with any unit..Simply your notching the gold jewelry out as many objects( foil, tabs and the like) do mimic gold jewelry on any unit....

NASA Tom would tell you to leave DISC=0 and listen to everything. Knowing there's a lot of Iron or Trash in the ground will force you to slow down and find the good targets with proper identification. The CZ-3D is an amazing machine but it is only as good as the person behind it. Hope this helps and good luck!

Small chains may come in on iron or iron/foil, as Dan pointed out. If they are really small it won't see them at all.

Are you using the 3D on the beach or what?

Tom

I understand what you are saying fellas, but if i cant go above 0 or 1 to find anything gold.I could of saved myself alot of money sticking with the 1236 or 1270 for depth and performance, the 1236 found the best coin i have ever found some 450 years old.Not to deep, just lucky that day i suppose and it was silver.
I will keep trying with the 3D,i have had many good signals and dug deep to find then i find it.Or am very close to it that its iron or an alu tin, quite dissapointed with it so far.
But i am sure it can do better, and i will plod away with it for now.
Not having a pop fellas, just telling you all how the 3D seems to be working for me in the good old UK. UKman

All will fall into place once you learn the language of a CZ...And of course other units don't have a meter to put you in the ball park...Aluminum tins or cans as we call them just cover a bigger area and rusty items can be identified very well with use...Do read Mikes CZ page...As far as gold coins or jewelry they fall all over the spectrum with every unit....

I listen to all the tones. It helps me to decide when to dig an when not to. I tried discing out the iron but didn't like it. I hunt iron infested grounds so I'm used to a lot of iron grunts while hunting.

There is no ID machine made that will do what you seem to want it to. The fact is gold can read anywhere from iron/foil up to zinc and even higher. Sure you can key on a couple zones and still get some gold and save digging certain types of trash if thats what you want to do.

UKMAN - The following is my write up of a study that I conducted last year. The Chart is on the previous Msg. PS I lived in Middlesex for 4 years - really miss it. Barry

I pulled out all the rings that I still have in my possession, those not been sold or claimed by my wife, family, and friends. That total was 136 rings of various weigh and karat. The set up of the detector was Ground-5, Discrimination-0, Sensitivity-2, and Volume-5.

Results:
1) 6 rings did not lock on a single icon. 5 of these alternated between 2 icons and 1 alternated between 3 icons.
2) 28 rings had distinctly stronger signal strength in the enhanced mode as compared to the salt mode. These were generally smaller rings and in general these rings read Foil in both modes.
3) 2 rings did not read in the salt mode at all but did give a signal in the enhanced mode. As in number 2 above these were smaller rings and these rings read Foil in the enhanced mode.
4) Approximately 50 rings gave different reading between the salt and enhanced modes. While on the whole most rings read higher in the enhanced mode this was not always true. A minority of these rings read higher in the salt mode.

Conclusions:
1) The changes made in discrimination calibration do change the segment location of where various rings will read in the salt mode and the enhanced mode.
2) For the rings tested the percentage of gold rings reading high tone nearly doubled from 14% to 25%. This is the single most significant observation resulting form this study. Confirmation by second parties is highly desirable.

Back in 1991 I owned one of the original CZ-6 detectors. At that time a distribution chart indicating the percentage of rings that could be expected by segment on the meter was compiled and has, I believe, continued to be distributed and referenced to this date.

Today I am primarily a water hunter. I have a Fisher CZ-20, Tesoro Tiger Shark, and a Whites Surfmaster PI modified by Mr. Bill.

With the advent of the CZ-3D I wondered if that distribution would still hold true or, as seemed likely, had sifted with the changes in discrimination calibration. I was very interested in comparing the difference in distribution of rings in the 7 segments of the CZ-3D between the Salt and Enhanced Modes. I also compared the distribution of rings by Tone.

This comparison is not meant to be the definitive answer on the subject. It is simply a sharing of what I found when testing my rings on my new CZ-3D. In fact, for the next couple of weeks, I would be happy to send my actual spreadsheet to anyone who requests it. Check your own rings, validate or invalidate my results. All I ask is that you share your results one this forum.

Nice charts and input...My understanding in the advanced mode to get proper reading signal must mix with the soil matrix( sort of like Minelabs with multiple frequencies)..I have one on the way(CZ3D) and should get a good idea from my 10 yr old planted coin garden...Perhaps I can add some good info...

Thanks bleaver very interesting, and your settings of the 3D i will give a go.I am no techno person,so your results would probably be to much for me to take in all at once. But i will study them more carefully, and hopefully learn a bit more.
One of the reasons i expressed by dissapointment with the 3D was with iron,so let me put it another way.The 1236 discriminates out iron better than the 3D,thats what i have found so far.But i would also like to add that i am still learning the 3D,and trying different settings ect.Which i believe will be the key for me here in the uk,i detect on pasture/ploughed land 99% of the time.
I will leave you all with this,i bought my fisher from probably the best detector dealer in the uk.When i ordered the 3D he said i was the first to even express an interest in the detector since its launch some 12 months earlier ??.I think your 1236 got me hooked on the fishers,so dont worry i will keep trying with the 3D and keep asking questions lol.
And thanks for all the input, all the best to you all. UKman
