air test

Well-known member
did air test on 3 detectors using u.s. nickel cz5= 14" disc at 0 sens 10 ground 8, surf pi - 12" ,coin$ was so erratic i could not air test it what a piece of sh@# no wonder they are giving that crap away just an other eBay piece of crap I'll never ever buy another unit on eBay it's always something wrong with that trash they sell

Robert,

Were you testing inside or outside ? I know inside, my C$ could not be juiced up because it was too erratic and I had to turn both the threshold and sensitivity down.

As far as the PI goes...they do not air test well. They are much better testing targets in the ground since they need the eddy currents and ground matrix to maximize their depth ( so I read !).

rover u are right i was agitated and not in a very good mood 2 say the lest i wish i could delete that post sorry 2 all for my tirade and cussing i will redo it all under better conditions i guess the meds for this flu wasn't helping either. sorry again folks, now iam going back 2 bed later and merry Xmas's 2 all and all a good night.

Robert...get better. As far as the tirade, who cares. Some machines do end up being a piece of s--t and do not work correctly or are not the machine for a persons particular hunting style or environment.

The CZ is a great machine. You should do well with it.

rover u are right the sens was 2 high after turning it down 2 sens 5 threshold at 0 it calm down and so did i and it's working like it should it is a good unit i was just freaking out and in the condition i was in i should not even been messing with it iam feeling a lot better iam not use 2 taking medication hell i won't even take aspirin, after i got sick i went 2 the drug store and bought a bunch of cold med's and took them all at once i won't do that again. thanks for the help and let the beep beep go on

As an aside to air tests:

I can't get my CZ's (6a and 20) to a sensitivity of 10 while hunting (7 is about tops). I've got two other brand detectors that chatter with the coils in the air once the sensitivity starts to come up a little. Can't air test either with sensitivity up but once the coil is near the ground, they get quiet and sensitivity can be cranked up.

So for me, air tests are only really useful to see if a particular detector is still behaving like it had when I first air tested it.

Air tests are not as useful as a good test garden.
My If you're using a new detector and want to get used to it then plant a test garden
with foil, junk caps, pull tabs, jewelry that you can stand to sacrifice, coins both on end and flat
silver and copper, all at various depths. If your a relic hunter then get some scrap iron to approximate your actual targets mass and size. You'll leave it buried and forget about it so make a good map.
If you ever have questionable issues with your detectors performance or get a new detector you can always refer to your test garden.
With a new detector you'll be able to acclimate quickly and lean how to read it.
In a few years you will have more accurate results from the halos that will build up in the ground around the objects you've buried.
I made one about 8 years ago and rarely use it but its there if I need it.

The C$ is a hot detector, and goes very deep. But the receiver circuitry is very sensitive to electrical noise from power lines (even your on-standby cell-phone), and can render it nearly useless. When I first set up my C$, I went outside, with various "targets" in zip-lock bags, spread over the ground in the side yard. I wouldn't find many targets at all, and the ones it did hit, the "depth" was a mere 2". Iwas ready to send the POS in to Fisher (this is one of the original Los Banos, & a new-in-box unit).

I quit for a while, then later went back out, and into the back yard. I went over my settings again, and found that 1.) I have notched-out the targets I was actually trying to detect, and 2.) there were no power lines anywhere nearby. The detecting distance of all the targets put a big smile on my face. In my side yard where I started, there are many buried power lines within 5 or 6 feet, a well-pump 240 VAC line within 3', and sprinkler valve lines also very close by. Air tests in my house are meaningless with all the emf all about. Hopefully, you will be able to get to an electrically "quiet" area, and find it working well.

Heck we find coins in the ground not the air ( ball park at best) is what your going to get..Just a fact some models don't air test well as they are made to mix with the matrix of the ground and of course outside interference comes into play so the next time you come up with a moderately deep coin hit raise your coil to simulate depth and should get a better estimate using the various modes your unit offers..In the ground is where it counts and depending on your neck of the woods imagine that will vary from forum posters..
Test gardens are a good idea also and have mine planted 20 years and still wonder how accurate the test may be taking into consideration some of the old coins you find may be in the ground 75-100 years or more...

I can't experiment with my DetectorPro PI in the house AT ALL. Also, in my yard, which is full of junk metal, it's hard to experiment with it. Where the PI shines is where there is very little trash, like most beaches, and it will most probably handle salt well too. Try it at the beach before you judge it, but be prepared to dig a lot of bobby pins and junk. I thought I hated mine, just like you did when I tried it in the house and the yard, but after taking it to the beach, I found 4 gold rings in two days. I changed my mind, although I do hate digging all those bobby pins and iron.

It's a hard decision on which detector to use at the beach; DetectorPro PI, CZ-5 with 10" coil, or CZ-21 with 8" coil.

Right now there is a beach in the area with some nice erosion, but it is full of iron and full of coins. If I used the PI I would be digging iron all day, so I have to use the CZ's there. I've found a lot of coins, but I haven't found any gold lately.
