Air Test Results

Hi Guys,
Tony N. was asking about air test performance of the XS so I did an air test last night to help answer his question. I used Mike Moutray's settings, gain 8, and manual sensitivity (not auto). I was using the 7.5 inch Minelab coil. I was testing a silver 1942 quarter that was well worn and very smooth. The quarter was placed on clean ground and was laying flat. These distances represent a broken coin signal that I would definately dig.
SEN = 5 DIST = 4 inches
SEN = 10 DIST = 5 inches
SEN = 16 DIST = 7 inches
SEN = 20 DIST = 8 inches
SEN = 24 DIST = 9 inches
SEN = 27 DIST = 10 inches
After doing this test, I was pleasantly surprised because I found out the machine was capable of acceptable depths at the low settings that I need to use in trashy areas. Recently I have been using a SEN = 17 in trashy areas, but now I will not be afraid to turn it down even lower when needed. But I'm sure the amount of corrosion on the surface of a buried coin will decrease the coin's signal strength, and also the coin orientation (such as a vertical coin) affects depth too. So this air test is not 100% representative of field conditions.

Mike,
One thing to try when in one of your trashy areas that surpried me as lower sensitivity will get more depth in some of the trashy areas too. I found a area where I was getting a lot of nulls and put a dime on the ground on top of a null. Was running sensitivity at 22 at the time and couldnt get a signal on the dime on top of the ground unless I almost touched it with the coil. Lowered the Sensitivity to 16 and could get a signal with the coil about a inch or 2 and when I lowered it to 12 I could get a good 3 to 4 inches with no problem.
Too much sensitivty in some of the real trashy areas accualy reduces the depth as it is picking up the trash more from my expereince with it.
Give it a try sometime and see what you think.

Very Interesting Post! I've been practicing (detecting) in my backyard. For the first couple of months all I found was trash. Last weekend I found a small area where I was finding wheat pennies (2), a Rosy dime, a 10 centavo and alot of nails. The nails sounded good, bouncing around in the upper right corner and read from 26-31, but would hold more on 27-28. All targets were 4"-6" deep. I run ferrous, sen. at 16, w/ the coin program. Checking w/ IM.Pinpointing was tough finding an area for clear threshold. Will try dropping the sen. down to 10.These forums have helped me alot learn this machine. Thanks to all! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
