All measurements are in inches.
I double checked most of the readings and they are +/- .25in. of the posted value.
I used minimum and maximum to eliminate as much human error as possible.
I attempted to maintain a sweep speed that gave the best depth reading.
* .750 gold cross measures 1.25 x .875 and is 2.3g

Note: Due to instability of the Cortes, I had to back the sensitivity down slightly in Disc mode.
Batteries were not fresh in the either machine but were acceptable.

Well this is my first post on here so here goes.
I used to be able to tune My old Bandido 2 to air test a clad quarter at 1 foot plus.
Sure was unusable outside in the real ground though.
Unstable as all heck with false signals everywhere.
Although out on the coast where minerals were very few i could super tune it in places that were clear of most trash.
Could dig coins as deep as 10 plus inches easy.
Air tuning for test indoors IMO just gives us a base of the sensitivity of a detector and not a real indication of true depth in cruddy ground.

I'm having difficulty fully understanding the results of your table. Could you explain each number in the Dime row? Just bought a Vaquero and very interested in sharing mine with the forum once I understand your table a little better.

Thanks

Air testing is more than a sensitivity test. An air test will establish what your detector is doing..Should the numbers drop off , then the air test is telling you something is out of kilter..I think that in any published distance tests, the coil size be noted, and the sound or meter setting be stated..A quick check today, says my V is hitting a quarter at 8 inches in air. The machine took a hit, but did magnificently in the field after that....I'll sit down in a week or so, and do a "distance in air". for my machine, wrote Dave to see if he has any hard numbers from when he owned the Vaquero..I just may send it off to Tesoro and pay for a check up, pre-authorize any work needed, and know the thing will be ready to go..Cordially NAD

Welcome ElBandido,

You must a had one of those really good Bandido II's
I hear about.

You are right. Air test are deceptive when it comes to
depth. But, thay are a tool for learnin. Even for an old
far+ like me.

I don't fool with air test very much, but I seem to learn
something when I do.

It's more fun ta detect and puzzle over my finds.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

I think we are looking at a totally different mental attitude between an air test and trying to find an item in the ground..An air test is mechanical and you are an observer..As Tab Dog said, you can learn from an air test.....settings, response, tone etc, again, as an observer... In searching, you become part of the detector, or try to... Your senses. are tuned to the machine , and finding targets at the fringe, or beyond what the detector is supposed to do.. One aspect of metal detecting that has been over looked, is the attitude of the detectorist..At best, we say "positive" or "negative",.. How much is the actual coupling of the mind to the metal detector, or the objects you are looking for.. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that Tab Dog has been digging items with no batteries in his detector. I am going to pick off some rings in the Spring.....I can see them,,,,,so there will be no problem finding....Friend of mine who used to pull gold out like a dredge, is having a dry period.I can see he is down.....Maybe a mental barrier? I go out thinking that the detector is part of me, and I part of it...Of course it sounds stupid ,but the excellent" luck " recently is way outside the bounds of "luck".....Cordially Nad

Yea Nad, I was pulling gold out like a dredge when I first got the Vaquero, then it dropped off when the excitement of having a new detector dropped. Then again like a dredge when I got the Cortes, and dropped off when the excitement dropped. I still have hope of finding any remaining gold when I go to the same ole parks, and I know there has got to be some gold there somewhere, but hope is not enough, gotta beleive, feel it, but getting in that mood is not that easy. Gotta drive out to places I haven't detected much, could bring back the excitement, like being in virgin territory. Dave

Yes my Bandido was one Killer unit.
Sorry i ever sold it.
It would find the the tinyest objects like BBs and pieces of cigarette pack foil.
I still remember the first coin i found with that thing i was elbow deep in the hole.
Many many finds like that.
But on subject i do think air test have some use although i dont mess with them anymore eithor.
Again if a detector only air tested on a quarter at 3 inches i would be quite upset still.

You are on ta somethin for sure Nad.

I have been tryin ta get a handle on it

for a while now.

It's 80 or 90 percent mental.

If I got my mind right, it comes from

some where. I know not where, but I

got a guess.

It has somethin ta do with being happy.

I know that sounds crazy, but I believe

it.

Kind a like that mind over matter stuff??

I don't know, or have a clue.

But meditation ain't no joke.

I don't want ta be religious about it, but

it is much more than machine and pure

luck for most of us.

HH,

Tabdog

Yaw,

It's tough ta do collums on tha editor here.

Thanks for tha effort.

I am interested and appreciate you sharin,

Tabdog

Tabdog, You're onto something here about being happy or about feeling good when getting invovled in something. When I go to Atlantic City casinos I'm prepared to lose $200, and I do. But years ago when I went to Las Vegas with my fiance (before I got married again) I was feeling on top of the world, everything was right with the world. And I couldn't lose, came home with more than $1000 profit. Like they say, we create our own reality. A lot of times I push myself to do something even tho I don't have a good feeling about it, thats when things don't go right. My detecting buddy says he finds gold when he has a strong feeling. It's best to be psyched up and in the mood, but I'll be detecting until I'm too feeble just because I enjoy doing it.
