Air Test Comparison Between The 8" Mono Coil And 10" x 14" Mono Coil On The Infinium

Looks like the large mono coil and the smaller one are not too far off in air depth. PI's just don't work well in the air, they need a matrix to get a better reading. But, the large coil is light, covers more area, and add a little halo to the target, and it should be a killer. Because the size of the larger coil, it was picking up more electrical interference at lower threshold settings, so the results don't really justify greater depth with the smaller coil. The test was done in my living room. The tiniest target, however, the 22 lead bullet didn't fair so well with the larger coil, an expected result. But the air test did show that the higher the threshold setting, the deeper the target can be picked up.

Interesting results.:wiggle:Just wait 'til ya get out into the field with it.:detecting: That 10"x14" mono completed my coil collection for LS a few months ago. I believe it to be the deepest of all(including 10"x14" double "D"):biggrin:Although MKll may be a tad bit deeper(at least in my experience diggin' at the beach):garrett::detecting:Happy Hunting!:)

Thanks John,

I was about to order the 10X14 mono. Your test is about what i have found with other large coil comparisons. I did a somewhat controlled test using the CZ 20 with 10.5 and one with the 8 inch. The 8 inch went deeper in the water for the same gold ring. almost an inch deeper. The 10.5 inch coil does cover more area but contrary to most printed information does not get me deeper. Did a test with the Excal and found same, so it is not unique. Seems like the smaller coil might, in some cases, concentrate the power more efficiently.

I tested the 3X5 coil on the Infinium and it does give up depth. The 8 inch mono which really measures nearly 9 inches seems about optimum for depth. I may still order the 10 X 14 for the coverage over open sand.

HI John.
Just looking at you histograms for the 8 inch and 10 x 14 mono's.

With threshold at 5:
My Infinium is similar and gives approx 7 inches on a 22 LR projectile with my 8 inch mono.
However my 10 x 14 mono and DD will also go out to 7 inches on the same target as compared to your 3 inches. There seems to be a large difference there.
Both of my coils give a good strong signal (HI/LO) at 4 to 5 inches on this target.

My 10 x 14 Mono is close to 12 months old and my big DD is the original which came with the detector in 2004.

8" mono will go deeper than 10x14 mono on land ,but not in the water.Try a Gold chain . the mono coils will find them ,but the DD will not ,even Garrett will tell you that the mono coils are better than the DD coil at the beach. My DD coil sits in the closet, I never use it ,my mono coil is all I need.Hi John Ring season start in April here in Fla.The water is warming up.
