Had a couple of hours to kill before tonight's Albany Devils AHL hockey game so what better way to pass the time than hitting my favorite park only a half mile from the arena. After a string of 13 Buffalo nickels, I finally dug some deep signals which turned out to be V nickels. I got three of them today including an early 1887 and 1889 plus a 1900. Dug a couple of wheaties also. The 1889 has a hole which appears to filled ??? I'll throw them in the tumbler and see how they come out.

Nice finds Ed. Got to love those deep signals. I found a token that has a filled hole but never a coin. They must have had second thoughts. They also could have been trying to weight the coin. I know gold plated v-nickels were passed off as gold five dollar pieces when they first came out. Seems like a lot of trouble to plug a hole.

Very nice - why someone would go to the trouble of filling the hole is a mystery to me. I haven't found a V nickel yet, but I'm one of those guys who doesn't usually dig the lower signals. Congrats.

Nice finds Ed !

I would get the filled nickel checked out ... maybe they filled it with silver ! Might be worth something more than a nickel !
