After the weekend hunt

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
Some members might still be at it but I had my fill of hunting in the heat and two days was enough for me. Things kind of petered out Saturday afternoon and most of the hunters drifted away heading home to some air conditioning I believe. Everyone seemed to have legitimate excuses for not staying for club activities. The club had fried chicken and side dishes for thirty or more members and we were really disappointed that we were down to 9 members by supper time.

The silver count was well into the 20's for the first two days and it just amazes me that the amount of silver that has been found year after year from this place. I believe this is our 6th or 7th year having our spring hunt there. A silver half, a V nickel, silver nickles, quarters, dimes and wheats ........ they were all there.

Here is my two days of fun finds and this is my second year of finding a working Mag light. I hit two silver dimes twice in the same hole and I found a real neat advertising token probably from the 50's, Pigsnwhistle drive in restaurant flip token, 700 W Farmington, Peoria.

A BIG thank you to Daryl and Star for donating the fish and also a big thanks to McLucky, our personal chef, and our oil man Nathan and where's the beef guy Andrew. Larry said the burgers were excellent. Sure wish I could have been there to eat one. :clapping: Also a big thanks to Steve C. for chairing the event.

Maybe next year I can join in on the fun. I sure miss sitting around the fire with you all and enjoying the comradery. Yeah, NEXT YEAR!!!!!!

HH to all,

Nancy

Congrats on your finds Larry. That's to bad that not many members were able to show up for the chicken dinner. You know if I was there I would have fuzzed right into the food. Once again I was able to detect the last 2 days and nothing but clad. I don't know at this point if I will make my goal of 10 silver for the year. I need to find some different spots to hunt.

Robbie, new spots are always a good thing, but have you completely covered all your old ones? I remember one park, that I hunted alot. One day I started working a grid in corner that I never paid much attention to. There were no ball diamonds close, no playground equipment, no park pavilion anywhere close. Not much reason for anyone to spent much time there, so not much reason to hunt it. But I did find silver there, I found more in that little corner section, near the entrance, than I found in days of hunting the other 95% of that park. Call it reverse logic, or thinking outside the box, or whatever you want, but we are creatures of habit and dash to places where the most people are likely to have gathered. We don't really know what these areas looked like 50, 75 or 100 years ago. What is now a 40 acre park may have been a half acre shaded lot to begin with. Get under those bushes and into those evergreens. They started out alot smaller than they are now. Go along those buildings and storm drains that we avoid because of interference. You might be adjusting your goal higher before you know it.

Dave, The spots that I'm hunting has had detectors over them for years. I used the reverse logic when I found my Mercury Dime and my 2 cent piece. I went to the complete opposite side of the park and got lucky. I have hammered that area pretty hard after finding the 2 coins. Even Larry and Daryl have been there and we all wound up with clad. It's great to be able to get out and hunt but you can only ride a lame horse for so long before it goes down. I just need a change of scenery. Thanks for your post it does help out quite a bit.

I found the compass first. Now I had a locator for silverware. What!!! It took me a day and a half to get the silverware thoughts changed to silver coin but then it kicked into high gear and a 1935 Walking Liberty Half was rescued from a very weedy pit, the site where Larry found a silver half last year. I had lots of fun, too bad the heat drove everyone out. Didn't have a sole for the seeded night hunt but for Jeff who drove all the way back an hour after dark so he could take pictures of the winners. I will put the totals of silver coins in the newsletter. Special note, Two neat finds showed up, an 1903 Liberty Head Nickel found by Luke and a Ike Dollar was found by Jeff.
