after the snow stopped

Took the sov gt out to an abandoned country club / golf course for a little while today. Was really cold and windy, but the snow is over for a couple of days and the ground is clear temporarily. I still don't know what to do with the detector, but it is making more sense after reading all the good stuff here. Managed to find a couple of new coins and some trash. There is a high voltage line (22,000 volts I think) running across the old golf course. On channel 2 there was a tremendous amount of noise from it, but switching over to ch 1 cut the interference back to almost nothing. The distribution line seems to / sounds like it has a low grade arc leak putting out wide band noise.
Was actually there looking for an old house place that I believe is there predating the golf course, but no such luck. Have looked extensively for a map sufficiently old to show at least some hint, but no go for now. With the cold and wind I got tired enough to just give up and go home and play with the dogs. More snow on the way according to the NPR news, so I guess i'm back to the computer for a while more. Just made a bloody mary, settling in with the dogs for the evening, everything seems OK for now.
OBTW, the all metal pinpoint thing really is sensitive, just like yall said. Like it better than my old Whites 5500 I think, or I can see that I will anyway. Having some issues with the headphone cord since it is such a small diameter. I have several other pair of phones, so I may just go ahead and change it over to a thick line for durability purposes.

JX,Welcome to the Forum. The Sovereign is a great detector, with frozen ground and snow here I usually don't get out into the field until mid or late March.Stick with the Sovereign for a while it gets much better.Good Luck Ron

JX Don't give up on that sovereign. When I first got mine a year and a half ago I thought that I had made an expensive mistake, I could not understand what the machine was telling me. Bought one of Ron's 180 meters and the light at the end of the tunnel got just a little brighter. It takes time and use to truly appreciate the Sovereign.

Now I would not be without my GT. In fact I thought that I was going to have to send mine back for repair so I bought a backup just in case. Thankfully it turned out to be the headphones and not the machine.

Last year I was working a city park. Took me three or four visits to cover the entire park. I noticed that I was finding very few coins that were shallow. Everything seemed to be a minimum of four inches. A guy approached me and commented on the number of coins that I was finding and stated that he was surprised as another guy had detected the entire park a couple of months before. That was when I realized what a great machine I had in my hands.

There is one city park that I hunted a few times that have the high voltage lines running across it. I went to an 8 inch coil in that park to cut down the amount of EMI. Still had some problem but the smaller coil helped considerably.

HH and Hang in There.

Back to the park again this afternoon. There is a short section of paved walkway that has the topping coat removed by flowing water without destroying the layers underneath. Detected there, found 6 beer cans, a bunch of pop tops, a couple of screwtops, but no coins. It was good to get out of the house for a while. The dogs were glad to see me when I got home. I guess my hunting buddy made a good choice to not take off from work early, since he's self-employed and rather goal oriented. HA!
