After reading many times the FaqFaq on the X 70...

I'm headed out again! I've been doing great with the finds but all the research that has been done that I've read about let me know I've been doing a few things different. I'm going to optimize my machine a little more and see what happens. I'll fill ya'll in on the difference later.... Man I love being steep on the learning curve!!!!!

Jack, my best advice is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" By that I mean do what works for you. Most of us post information that we find helpful, for the sites we hunt and our style of detecting. And I'd venture to say that there aren't any two of us who hunt exactly the same. Sure, there is some "technical information" that should help "maximize" the performance of your X-Terra. But all in all, the physical part of metal detecting is an art, not a science. Research for good sites, learn how to set up your detector for that specific site, keep the coil flat, overlap your swaths, listen to what the detector is telling you and enjoy the hunt! Let us know how it goes! HH Randy

Well I had a good yesterday afternoon. I went to a place I've hunted once. The park I played in as a child. Way back then:)the park was over fifty years old. I'd say conservatively:thumbup:a 100+ year old park. After targeting a couple of pennies right quick and using a different way to ground balance my X 70 I had a lull. I'm trying to use all metal and well I feel sure I'm hunting way too trashy places it seems. Then one of the neighbors from across the street came and walked his dog and talked to me for a while. He reminded me of where the swings used to be and the old concrete block building stood. I remember making glue as a child and drawing in this place. My cousins and neigbors, all of the children from around the park. He also reminded me of where the monkey bars once stood:bouncy:Ahhh there's a place to lose change! My Tacoma was parked over that spot, part of the small 4 car dirt parking lot now. I'm the only one there so I just moved it out to the edge of the curb. Now this is a very "not" used place, park wise that is. After moving the truck I'm walking back over to the monkey bars spot and notice that there is five older residents sitting on the front porch watching me. I go back to detecting and get a good signal right where the monkey bars used to be and drop to my knees to dig and I hear from across the street and elderly young lady speaks out, "did you find something?" I unearth a 1951 d wheat penny. I tell her yes! We converse long distance and before I know it I'm getting instructions from 4 different porches. I swing some more and get a good solid tone but the TID # does'nt make sense, it's bouncing all over. I drop to my knees again and pull out the trowel and you guessed it, "did you find something?" I pull out part of a childs silver spoon, I looked for the rest but it was not there. I describe to the lovely young ladies and gentlemen what I found. I have a lull again. I decided to ease over to where the swings used to be. I'm on a roll now. I'm getting good hits every few minutes and digging away. You guessed it again "did you find something?" I'm loving it and now the neighbors across the street are talking back and forth to each other about the park from porch to porch and what they used to do there and what I'm finding. I dig a handfull of pennies a couple of dimes and another "heads you win, tails you lose" coin. Found one of them in two consecutive trips. I tell the neighbors that I'm heading home and they want to know when I'll come back. I let them know, very soon, very soon. Here's some pics of the finds, I only got one wheat penny and I know there "has" to be silver there! Silver, except for the spoon today has eluded me totally. I'm dirt diving in 100 to 200 year old places. It will come, ya'll will probably hear me yell when it does!

Oh, I remember playing "king on the mountain" on the monkey bars! Next time you go back, ask each of those neighbors if you can detect their yards. You never know what you may find. HH Randy
