After market large Coils - need help.

I am fairly new to my explorer. I have added the Sun-ray probe and am considering adding a larger coil. I was hoping to get deeper and cover more ground. My primary hunting area is in the woods on old battlefields without a lot of trash.

I see after market coils made by Sun-ray, Coiltek and Excelarator. I was planning on perhaps a 14 or 15 inch model.

IS there any real difference in the performance of these coils? What about weight? I notice the Sun-ray seems more expensive.

Has anyone had experience with more than one of them? What brand did they prefer?

Hi HHDigger,
I was confronted with the same situation when I first purchased my Explorer xs. I also purchased the coiltek WOT from DOC at coiltek.
Its an aw some coil and you can pull coins and metal objects 18 to 20 inch's deep ! (depending on the soil conditions). Now as far as SUNRAY's X 12 coil.... It's also an aw some coil! plus it's lighter.
The difference in size is about 3 inch's. (wot being the larger one).
But remember the bigger the coil, the more "masking" of good targets may occur. again, depending on how much trash targets are mixed in with the 'good targets. Now if your detecting in an area or field where there isn't alot of pull tabs, nails, crown caps and you believe there may be good targets, Then go with the WOT. On the other hand, the SUN RAY x12 will work as well in the same conditions, it will also give you a slight edge in "dodging" the trash at a site peppered with junk. Both are the best coils as far as large coils go. And from personal experience, Both Ralph from SUN RAY and DOC from coiltek are always there to give you advice personally! AND their BOTH sponsors of this great forum website.:usaflag:

I used the S-12 from Sunray on my Sovereign Elite and found it to be an outstanding coil. I an Exelerator 12.5 on my Explorer II and also find it to be an excellent coil. Both are well made, well balanced, and light. I can't speak for any other sizes.
