After Market Coils for the CTX

Mike K (Ohio)

Is there a general opinion of a brand of a large coil for getting as deep as possible for all those field digs?

The monster 17x13 coil is as big as it gets for the CTX Mike, unless something else has come out that I’m not aware of,which it hasn’t...

Have you used it? Just curious if they live up to there name you know?

This is my goto coil for relic hunting in farm fields.
Pin pointing can be tricky but accurate after I figured it out.
My deepest find I can recall was a brass button 14” plus , a nice strong signal.
Good luck

Yes,it’s my main coil for hunting deep coins. Even in Auto+3 it’s generally no problem to find wheats and dimes RELIABLY to 9” and at times a bit deeper. No matter how many stories you hear, hitting small 9” deep coins is NOT easy. Fields that are cleaner than a junked out park or school ought to provide VERY good results with this coil. It’s not the cheapest thing in the world but it does work VERY well.

It it made by minelab?

Mike K,
Yes, it's made by ML.

Perhaps you're not aware of these facts;
1. Minelab offers a total of three (3) coils for the CTX.
The stock 11" round, a 6" round and a 17x13".
2. There's only two other aftermarket coils available from other than Minelab:
A 10x5" and a 14x9"...both by Coiltek.

That's a grand total of 5 coils available for the CTX.
Since you've already got the 11", that narrows your search to 4 coils.

The 14x9 coiltek is only longer than the stock coil (not as wide), and in my tests, it didn't go nearly as deep as even the ML stock coil.
The only coil really bigger than stock is the Minelab 17x13". Period.

That's your 'choice'.

Edit - Anticipating your next question...the reason it's so limited is that (unlike the e-trac) the CTX has a proprietary chip in the coil that does some of the processing before it reaches the control box.
ML will only license usage of that chip for a fee. Based on what we've seen, I'm guessing that fee must be more than other coil manufacturers are willing to pay.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. I just ordered the minelab one. The guy let me use his until mine shows up next week. Couldn't pass up that deal. Thanks again for your time!!!!
