After I use Auto G.B...Should I Hunt the XT-70 with Tracking On or Off in Trashy areas ??? :argue:

This can be a matter of personal preference, or assessment of the current situation. The term trashy is very relative.

"I" would probably approach it thus:

If the mineral content is changing rapidly, keep tracking ON. If the mineral content varies only a little, and what "I" consider heavy trash, I would leave tracking OFF.

But there is a caveat, Beach mode tracking is about twice as fast as Standard tracking. So in saltwater with "trash", turn tracking off, but you will probably need to lower sensitivity, or notch out low conductors if falsing from the salt ensues.

Only further experience, and becoming one with the machine, will provide greater insight.:ninja:

I am running my XT-70 with my M,and L coils,,,,,and
The GB in certain areas that I hunt fo example...Change from 8-14 in one area ,and 75 to 100 feet away it is 12-28...There is a "Mostly trash " target atleast every other 3 1/2 foot sweep of the coil ,,,if not 2-3 per sweep
So in this case you are saying leave tracking on ?
I am just wondering if the "tracking" might 'track' a good target out in certain cases ?:wiggle:
It seems as if a Compass Machine I have(with factory set GB) does better job in some of the ground I hunt than some other machines that I have.....(including my XT-70 with Track-on)
But I also have to take in to consideration that it is about 14 khz.....and I am using 3-or 7.5 khz,,,,,,,,,(difference....?)
I dont think that that is what makes the difference...i am thinking that in certain situations........................A somewhat stable or "Set" G.B. without tracking.... does not let a machine track a target out...LOL.........I know I sound kind of weird about it.....but I would Like to know...
Any imput on my thoughts about this,? Any merit to this kind of thinking ?

Do what I did, bury some trash and good targets, walk along and allow the machine to track as if all was normal. Pass over the trash, and then the desired targets. You can even try multiple passes over the trash, and over the desired targets, and make note of what the X70 is doing. It can be fun to do this while in the GB mode, and watch exactly what the tracker is doing.

With ten minutes of very little effort, you will have "your" answers in "your" ground with the good targets "you're" interested in.

Tectin since the days of "yorn".(sorry, I couldn't resist)

It might track out some stuff especially small deep targets. What I saw the other day on a deeper copper penny that gave a fainter but still easily recognizable dig me signal was that tracking did have a slight affect on the audio response when I "hovered" over the target checking it out from different directions. IMO it would be best to turn the tracking off on targets giving a faint response or showing all the arrows on the depth gauge. Better safe than sorry!

I feel too you can run track on if there is not a lot of man made iron items in the ground like the MXT recommends. I find with the MXT and i am sure it will apply with the X-Terra 70 too on auto track is when you have one of those very weak signals you like to wiggle the coil over trying to get a better signal it will actually be trying to track out that target. With the MXT and I do this with the XT70 too when I get one of the weaker signals I will take it out of track once i know it will be a signal I am going to be working a bit. If I forget to turn it off the signal will disappear when I work it and i will have to re ground balance and put it in lock on the MXT or just ground balance on the XT70 and not turn the track on.

Rick,

Here's something to try the next time you get a decent hit that won't repeat from all angles due to nearby iron. Turn the tracking on and after a few sweeps start walking around it and see if the signal improves. I run tracking "almost" all the time in iron after checking a few of those.

The tracking circuit on the X-70 seems to do a lot more than just ground compensation.

I never tried that yet, but will give it a try. My MXT will lose the signal completely and thought the XT70 would too, but never tried it. I know the MXT will also on a weak signal if tracking is left on and you go over it several times trying to get a better signal, but it lose it completely.
I will give it a try next time out with it.

Rick,

All I know is that with tracking on the 70 will hit co-located targets in iron with a very good response from angles that give no or a poor response with it off. It's not as pronounced on mid conductive items with the 3 Khz coil.
