Does anyone out there know if coal which has been tossed into a yard yrs ago will make the mxt erratic? vdi's bouncing all over?
Hunted an old church today and the unit was going nuts ,so I dug a signal I got in the 80"s and found a couple hunks of old coal.
Thanks

The ASH of coal, known as "coke" or "clinker," looks very much like unburned coal, and does give a signal for most detectors. I ran into this in MT. As for whether unburned coal can give a signal, that is a question somebody else will have to answer. Here in the Mojave Desert coal is a rarity. HH Jim

coal (carbon) and salt (sodium cloride) are metals and can give a positive responce. Try the salt mode for the ground setting. This may help.

On the 2003 Jimmy Sierra England Tour, Coal gave me an ID reading of 01 on the scale... easy to identify <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
