I got a 10X12 coil with my Silver uMax and I have mixed emotions about keeping it. I have air tested it and I don't seem to get any more depth than the stock 8", although I could see where it would come in handy on the beach or clad gathering for better coverage. Is it a good coil to hang on to or should I find a better home for it? I checked E-bay and there are none available, so I don't even know what to ask for it........ideas?

Thanks all.

I would give it a try before getting rid of it, don't go by air tests they don't mean a thing. Steve.

for whatever reason Tesoros, at least the ones that I have owned, like some other makes do not air test very well. The 10x12 coil will add a couple of inches to the depth if it ground balances properly. As far as the selling price, I believe they sell for around $70.00 used.

What is the distance on a cent , quarter, in air, for you with the stock coil on the Silver U Max? On a cent , I am getting 5 inches...in air, and seem to be hitting slightly less in the ground...maybe four inches as a maximum...Use the larger coil for a while.. Regardless if you sell it or not, your experience will be quite valuable for someone who is considering buying one. I could see where it would be a killer on beaches..My 5 inches in air is on DISC at iron, sensitivity set at max..I only run all metal on sand, and even there know I am leaving the small gold rings...Still learning,,Now to find numbers on the more upscale Tesoros............. cordially NAD

I'm with the majority - give it some field time before deciding. It will definitely give you better coverage for cleaner areas such as soccer fields etc. Add a5.75 or 7" and you've got all the bases covered pretty much.

larry , i could not stand the 8" coil but the 8x9 is a real winner ya i tried a big exelerator coil and found no better depth just post it on the fourum someone wants it

Thanks everyone. I have been spending a LOT of time on another detector and haven't had much time for the Silver yet. I did use it in our club hunt for a key hunt and I have spent some time with it at a local park. I don't think I want to get rid of it, just not sure if I would use the 10X12.

Thanks again.

Myself I love the brown 8" round stock coil. I had a 9X8 coil last summer on the Silver uMax I had & to my surprise it made the detector heavier and I didn't see any increase in depth. I wouldn't mind trying a 9X8 on my new to me Silver Sabre to see how it does with it. Steve.

theres a few of em on ebay if ya referin to the 10x12 concentric web coil , they sell U.S 12" x 10" Concentric - 12x10C-SW $127.20 and add half that again if ya buy'in from the UK

[size=large]... Larry, I can see where you might have reservations about that bigger coil, especially since you and your wife use White's models with auto-tracking circuitry. Since nobody makes a 'perfect' detector I have made it a point to own a few detector models to satisfy a variety of hunting applications, and most often one is a Tesoro.

For the most part, I have little use for a search coil larger than 8". I seldom use White's 950 coil, preferring an 8" thin-profile for general hunting on an XLT or XL Pro, or the 6

Thanks Monte. Your comments are always welcome and usually right on. I doubt if I would ever use the 12" coil and I guess I was looking for a reason to keep it.

In this day of high tech detectors, it's nice to get back to the basics of the Silver once in a while. In addition to the DFX, I use the Minelab SE Pro and another "way over the top" detector. It's getting to where you almost have to go to college to learn how to use some of these.

I bought the 10 x 12 coil for my Cortes, used it one time in the field, don't like it. Too heavy, air tests coins only one inch more, produces a too much ground noise in the field.

To be honest, ALL air tests to me are disappointing-and it thankfully isn't that important. Yesterday, I had built a sling with a bungee cord so that I could swing my CZ-5 which I had resigned to the closet because of the weight factor. I was pleased with the configuration and at low sens. (2-3) I got that "dink" sound for a deep target. After digging a foot I couldn't find it. On the spur of the moment, I ran and grabbed my Silver umax just to see if I could get a signal (4) sensitivity. To my surprise it came in nice and soft with a easily discernible signal. It was a little wide so I'm guessing aluminum can. Will have back w/shovel when no one is at the school to find out. It was in a gravel playground that turns into regular ground after about a foot, so I don't think that disturbing the soil had anything to do with the Silver's ability to detect it.

Some of those wide signals are coins or coins and junk grouped together and all falling within the signal pattern. These little gems gave a wide signal in the bark chips.

If you do not like the 10 x 12 get this instead.....

[size=medium]I have a 10X12 uMax coil. I have used it a few times.

I used it on a Euro Sabre.

It is heavy. I turned it around backwards and it is a

little better, but still heavy. I found that it is good for

relic hunting. It goes deeper on larger targets, and

still hits good on musket balls. But may not be as

sensative on smaller targets. It picks up coins alright

but have not used it enough to know about smaller

targets.

It just doesn't seem as sensative to them.

I seldom use it because it is not good in the woods.

It gets all tangled and I can not keep it close to the

ground. It is also heavy, as I said.

I tried it on a field with the grass cut. But only trash

was found. It found the trash just fine!!~lol

Happy Hunting,

Thanks David, It sound like an Ebay item to me. I just can't see myself using it.

I would have to get the Silver out and test it again for depth. It seems that I got close to 7 inches with a quarter and a little less on a dime.
