Advice on research, etc?

Mike_GA

New member
Background: Moved to Atlanta area recently. I'm very interested in CW relics & I can confidentally say that I have checked out almost every Ga CW website available but where do I go from here? I don't have a clue as to how to find campsites & areas of skirmishes & movements. What is the best step for me to take next to get on the trail of finding some areas where CW soldiers were?

Any & all suggestions are appreciated!!!

Also, If any1 wants to hunt together in the Atl area, I'd be interested to hear from ya. I live in Paulding county.

1 more thing....LoL....I have a Headhuner Diver & a Garrett TA300 that I'm looking to trade for a good relic detector. What type do y'all think I should be looking for? I haven't kept up on things for the last 2 to 3 years so I'm not up on the newer machines.

Thanks again!!

Hi Mike,

See if you can find a local club in your area. Go to the local library for research on any Civil War activity in your area. Try to locate various sites on modern maps, and then go out and contact the land owner to see if you can get permission to go on their land to search for artifacts. Pick up a copy of "Finding Civil War Campsites In Rural Areas" by David Poche. Check with David at Dixie Metal Detectors, a FindMall sponsor. He had some copies available not too long ago. Read books written on the local history of the area that you want to hunt. There is a wealth of information available on the Internet as well. Do a Google search on you county history. You should find enough to get you started.

There are many capable "relic" machines available, but I don't know what might work best in your area. I would check with local hunters to see what they are using, again at that local club. My personal favorite for relic hunting is the Whites MXT. I hunt highly mineralized, sandy soil. It may, or may not, work in your area.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the forums. There are a lot of very knowledgeable folks here that will answer your questions.

Good hunting,
OldeTymer

Get yourself a copy of "Finding Civil War Sites in Rural Areas." That is an outstanding source for information and costs very little ($12.95+shipping). Another excellent source are the Official Records (O-Rs). I have all 128 volumes on one CD-ROM for $69.95+shipping. Those will keep you busy for a long time. I would also visit the Atlanta Library and search their bazillion documents and records. Research is 90% of this game. As for detectors for relic hunting, their are several that excel at this task. Ask 10 relic hunters and you'll likely get 10 answers. If you want to give me a call I'll be glad to give you my insight on the hobby. I've been doing it for a while. Good hunting, David@Dixie

Hey David,

Great minds think alike. I didn't know if you still had copies of the book or not.

Good hunting,

mike here's another way. for topo maps go to yahoo type in terra server USA this well give you topo maps and overhead maps of your area just use there search engine. Now for the real cool stuff go to the civil war official records online. Just go to yahoo to search engine and type in eHistory OSU official Records of the civil war. You may only need to type in eHistory OSU. when you get to the site under official records hit search this well take you to the search engine. type in town or place in your area and presto!! any troop movements ect well come up with that town ect anywhere in the records. Good Luck And if you need more help just ask.

Mike,
Shoot me an email, maybe we could hook up. I used to live in Paulding but live a little west of there now. Just starting back up detecting but have checked some of my old sites and see a few are still available!!

That site is the US Library of COngress online map collection. It is the absolute best site for CW maps.

I'm in the process of posting my collection of old maps on my web site. Many of the maps show details like parks, schools, rail stations, etc.

your link and the one i got from the guy at work on the 1862 ky. mapgive the same response, temopary file no longer available.

Mike, google "the battle of Atlanta". You can also google "civil war diaries". There is some good information in a lot of the diaries. As for detectors check out the Teknetics T2. Go to the T2 forum and check out the post. Good luck.
