Advice on how to seperate a seized up shaft...??

Diggin-it

New member
Anyone know of any tricks to try to seperate a seized up lower AT-Pro shaft from the upper shaft? I beach and freshwater hunt and neglected to seperate and clean the shafts for a long time and now 2 of my 3 AT-Pro's are seized up bad.

Let the shafts thoroughly dry. Get yourself a plastic or rubber hammer, does not need to be sledgehammer size. remove the electronics from the shaft. gently tap the upper shaft near where the lower rod enters while holding the shaft upside down, that is, with the armcuff closest to the ground. with enough tapping, the silt and sand will fall out of the shaft and you will be able to turn, loosen, and remove the lower rod. it will be harder to remove if the pieces are wet or soaked with wd40,etc as the sand will not fall out as easily. good luck.......

A couple screwdrivers thru each side of seized up shafts and a someone else to help to press retainer locking clips maybe?

screw driver and hammer

If brute force doesn't work, try pouring hot water over and into the shafts, twist as needed.. The hot water will help dissolve any salt and/or corrosion,it also heats and expands the outer shaft.

Thanks for the tips; I have only had mine in the lake just 3 times and the lower abs pole is seized up tight into the lower metal shaft/pole. What I'm thinking of doing after I get it apart is the grease the shafts where they fit inside of each other with some of my silicone grease as well as hit the threads on the twist locks with the stuff. Yes I know that stuff can trap sand and grit but at least it will come apart with ease to clean, rinse and repeat.

Don't use silicone or any other lubricant on the twist lock threads. The lubricant makes the twist lock too easy to turn and over tightening can result. The outer threaded nut can be easily cracked. Don't ask how I know.

I wonder if a surf board wax like "Mr Zogs Sex Wax" (a legitimate surf board wax...weird name) would work to help keep the parts from seizing up again after broken free...?!?

So how do you know?? Lol, just kidding; sounds like from experience. I have already done the deed but thanks for the heads up. Haven't had a chance to work on getting the pole separated yet but now I have a few new tricks to try out, thanks.

Soak in Cider.....LOL!
