advice on gain

Neil

Well-known member
does anyone know if the gain in any way effects correct target ID?

thanks,
Neil

For me it can correctly ID small targets but also deep targets could (in theory) mimic small targets so it should make some deeper targets easier to hear/ID also.. But having gain at 10 you might end up digging a lot of small foil. (own experience)

Gain at 8 seems just about right for me.

My tip is to find a iffy or weak signal and try to increase gain then you can see what effects it will have in your conditions..

Obviously when in trash you might not want to have gain to high nor sensitivity to easier pick out the good stuff among the trash.

Hope this helps,
Eu

I run my gain at 9 where there isnt a ton of trash. My experience with gain just like sensitivity is when you really crank it up you get depth under the coil... but you also get more sensitivity in the area surrounding the the outside of the coil. I find myself having to move the coil around a bit to locate the good target sounds i pick up. Once the target is located properly under the center of the coil then i do get a better reading and a little deeper. With a high gain i here the high tones but those may change from say a dime to a penny as does the ID number... mostly the Ferr numbers.

so far at this trashy site Im detecting(some wheats is all Ive got so far) Ive found setting the gain at 5 and sens at 10 is what seperates up targets well and eliminates hitting targets at the coils edge. Ive got wheats down to 5" so far is all, lots of garbage at this site.
