Advice on Coiltek 12X8

Against advice to the contrary I bought a Coiltek 12X8 Coil. I was told by multiple people not to buy this Coil. I previously bought a Coiltek 10X5 and I was over joyed with it. I have been off on Vacation planning to spend the next week fishing and it not only rained hard, the Wind was at 40+. So I came home to find my 12X8 had arrived. The weather was not bad so I hooked it up and went off to try it. I dug a bunch of clad and found this coil hits hard on Zinc Pennies. My Stock coil does not. Now most of you would say who cares, but this always bothered me. I dug so much clad my Knees were sore but none of it was deep. Below is the interesting finds. One place I hunted was a new place and one place I have pounded. Not sure where the 44 Wheat Penny came from but the small silver ring was about 6" down and hit hard enough to stop me while walking to my Mule headed home. The other thing is a Whatisit and I believe this is a Woodsman Cuff Link. It is not gold but this is what you get digging those Zinc Signals. The other object is a Hockey Token from 1978 Kenny Cooper Goalkeeper. Around here I have never even heard of someone watching a Hockey Game so this was an Unusual find. It rang in at 01-48. I am really happy with this Coil. I have never liked a Round Non concentric coil. I always lean toward an Elipticle DD and I think this one will be as deep as the stock. No idea why some people do not like these Coils. To me they ID better and deeper than the Stock Coil. The price is higher but why pay less for something that is just not up to par with your Detector.

"Why pay less for something that isn't up to par with your detector"....that is a question that I will NEVER know the answer to. It's like putting cheap bargain tires on a Corvette,it just lessens the Corvette! Sometimes it isn't easy to optimize something without trying several things out, nice to know the Coilteks aren't letting you down. I thought I read somewhere that Coiltek makes the Minelab coils for Minelab too, maybe I'm just blabbering....it's happened before.

Here is what I heard and I heard this from two Dealers. When Minelab first started making Detectors they did not make Coils and Coiltek made all their Coils. They now make their own Coils as in the Pro Coil but Coiltek knows their Secrets and continues to work with them to this day. A good reason to believe that although more expensive, Coiltek should make a really good coil for Minelab. I hunted with a CTX the other day and I noticed that the ID seems more stable than the Etrac. Using the Coiltek coils on the Etrac, I see more stability in the ID than I do the Pro coil. Not sure about depth yet as I haven't dug any deep coins, but I am sure about the really stable ID as well as the PinPoint. Coins are also hitting hard. When I say Pinpoint, I do not mean the Pinpoint feature on the Etrac because I do not use it. I just turn 90 and dig where the signal crosses. Hunting the places I hunt, I can not dig unnecessarily, so ID is more critical than depth. In fact I really don't use the Depth meter either. The only time I use the Depth meter is if the Ferrous number is way off but Conductive is good and Depth meter is at Max, I dig. Otherwise I keep walking.

Am I wrong about disliking round DD coils? I had a V3i and I hated the round stock DD on it as well.

The Coiltek coils are ok,, I even still have one for the Etrac.
I have found better values , especially when you consider a possible faulty coil has to be sent to Australia to see if it qualifies under the "usage" terminology of the warranty.

don't think you'll ever have to worry about a coiltek coil breaking

A friend of mines 5 x 10 for his CTX had the cable fail after about 6 months. The coil was heavily used on a near daily basis and in conversations(e-mail) with Coiltek , he was told that coverage under warranty would only occur after they inspected the coil to see if it was within their definition of "normal usage". He sent it to them in Oz on his own dime and received one of the newer model 5x10s with the relocated ears and correct bolt holes a little over six weeks later.

I use the Nel SS coil that is similar to the coil you've mentioned and I use it a LOT and it's probably my second favorite coil with the 6" eq2 being my favorite. With that said tho..... It is my belief that the round DD's do a much better job on the deeper coins that are on edge than the eliptical DD's....???? I'm no coil expert but I've yet to see my elliptical shock me with a deeper on edge coin (?) where my round DD's have...but they are also bigger (11" pro & 13" Ultimate)..... Just some thoughts............
