Advice needed.

Hi, I am new to the the group and live in Western Washington. I currently use a White's Classic IDX/SL and I have decided to get another detector. I am a big fan of White's and had decided on getting the XL Pro. I think that I would like the analog meter and I have read great reviews. Now I am very interested in the X-terra 50 and read several good reviews on this machine as well. Anyone have any thoughts on these 2 machines and how they compare? Most of my detecting is in local parks for screwcaps... err I mean coins! Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob.

I can only tell you that the XL is a very cool machine, it seems to do very well in high trash better then my fisher's. It has very good depth maybe not as good as the 3Z but I have not had any finds yet that are that deep on the XL. Deeper then 9 inches has yet to to be seen. On the XL you can also hunt in all metal mood and get target ID.

The cool thing about the XL is you can use the big foot and get 18x3 inches of gorund covered. It is light and fast and you can really clean up a lot of the say good stuff fast. I use it to hit big parks and fields then go in with my fisher.

You just mentioned two of my favorite detectors. I love the XL Pro for the accuracy of the discrimination circuit. Put on my 350 Snooper coil and take me to that trashy park! It will separate targets with the best of them. Call me "old school", but something about watching the needle make those ever so slight bounces to the left on a piece of trash is unbelievable. And it will lock on solid to the keepers. I will honestly say that I have never used a detector with the target ID accuracy of the XL Pro. And that includes my MXT. Sorry to see the XL Pro being discontinued and at the same tiem, glad I have two of them in my possession.
Enter the next generation! The X-Terra detectors are a totally new concept in single frequency detectors. Lightweight, well balanced and very sensitive. I will honestly tell you that I have not been able to distinguish target ID with the digital LCD nearly to the point that I can with the analog meter. But, I've only had it 3 weeks. I know the X-Terra will hunt deeper than the XL Pro. But in those trashy parks you are hunting, maybe separation is more important than depth??? I have the whole arsenal of coils for my XL Pros, and each of them serve a specific need. Depth, coverage, separation etc. And, I am very anxious for the release of the accessory coils for the X-Terra. Hopefully, as with the coils on my XL Pro, each of them will serve a specific need for my coin hunting. Currently, the stock X-Terra offers very deep hunting, 4 tone audio, sensitive to small targets, easy on the batteries, well balanced and rugged enough for those "all day" hunts. I can still determine targets better with my XL Pro. But after 3 weeks with the X-Terra, I am learning it can find those old coins too. With a little more practice, maybe I will adapt to that LCD! And I've only got a few hours on the X Terra. But, right now if I had to choose I think I would go for the X terra.
It handles hot ground better, its deeper, lighter, better balance, and cheaper on batteries.
It also has great Target seperation for a 9in coil. When they come out with a smaller coil this thing will be hard to beat.
Advatages of the XL PRo... Coil assortment is amazing.. You can get everything from trash can lid size all the wat down to a 3.5 in and they all work great for different things. Accuracy... You can't beat the XL for an accurrate meter...
In my opinion the X terra has a shorter learning curve and will be a better machiune over all.
But, You really can't go wrong with either one.

Thanks for the great replies. This is going to a tougher decision than I thought. Coil selection is important to me. I have a Bullseye 5.3 coil that I use the majority of the time. This coil would also work on the XL. I believe that I would really like the analog meter and all of info that it gives. I don't consider myself a "hardcore" hunter. I sometimes go a couple of months without going out with the detector. An easy to learn and use machine is also very important to me. At this point, I am actually leaning towards the X-Terra. Thanks.
