so im looking to get a water only machine and was thinking on the whites dual field, need something for scuba/snorkling and the beach (in water only) and all i care about is gold/silver/plat, jewlery big and small.

is that the best one, or is there beter ones out there,
\
thanks

The Dual Field is a good PI detector, but I don't like that large coil it has and the fact that it floats like a cork. Anderson makes a coil wieght for it and I would highly recommend getting one if you buy the Whites.

The Tesoro Sand Shark and the Garrett Sea Hunter are both good diving machines also. In fact, the Mel Fisher group is still usng the Sea Hunter when they go exploring, the same units they used when they found the Atocha.

I understand you are only interested in gold and silver jewelry, but I hope you also understand that PI detectors will offer you absolutely no discrimination at all. If it is metal, it will hit it deep. That includes foil, tie wraps, sparkler wires, iron flakes, etc.

It will also give you fantastic depth to find gold and silver jewlery.

It is a trade off that cannot be avoided.

If you need discrimination on a detector you can take diving, I would advise you look at the Minelab Excaliber II. Much more expensive, but worth it in the harsh salt water environment.

I'm no pro, but thought of a couple of more to mention. These are rare and not in production any more. The best for the beach/shoreline were the Eric Foster Pulsepower Detectors. The Goldquest SS (non-waterproof) and Aquasearch (waterproof) will pick up some smaller gold that others will not see, because of their lower pulse delay (where you can use it). These aren't made anymore and are rare, but you see one for sale a few times a year or so if you watch. Some people have waterproofed the Goldquest SS. There are higher powered models but extremely rare.

Up there with those (for shoreline/beach) is the Anchor Electronics Barracuda. Also not in production any longer. Although i think there is a kit you can buy to build one.

If you want a pulse for scuba get either a Aquascan Aquapulse, or a JW Fishers (not the other Fishers). These aren't great for beach/shallow water, and usually vice versa (some will).

I only have used the Pulsepower units on the beach and in the water.

But as Smudge mentions, you can dive with the excalibur, and it will disc out iron if there is much in your area.

Good luck!
