Advice for skillful Newbie

Hey all-

I'm Roger and my girl Tara and i live right on the water on Bainbridge Island, a small island right off the coast of Seattle. I am doing ok learning to master our xterra 305-finding newer coins in the local parks and plenty of junk from the old lumber mill town nearby so i know i am doing some things correct.

BUT, next to nothing on our pebble / sand beaches-which are numerous in this area. So, advice pls? Or maybe is it just my neck of the woods or shape of our shores here? Plenty of iron trash in the sand-but literally nothing else but a single modern quarter and lots of cool beach glass.

What might i be doing wrong? Thanks all for your advice! Btw i am using randy's continuous tone technique and am GB'd typically at a 3 or 4 out of 22 tops i think. Base setting is 6.

Thanks!

Roger

It's not you...it's the amount of traffic maybe. Your season of warm water is short..have you checked the yearly water temps compared to Califorina. And One more factor, History.

They could be masked by the iron. Im assuming you arent using much disc and digging about anything BUT iron? I did anything but bottle caps and iron. Many machine give different tones or TID on deep targets especially if they arent centered. You have to go enough to the beach or like OBN said know the history of the beach to see if its worth the hunt. I know you say you are a skilled nuwbie..... which is a bit of an oxymoron, but make sure you keep your coil on or very near the sand. If you have it 3 inches above the sand and moving FAST you arent going to pick up those small targets and you loose all that depth. Try a smaller coil and do some air testing on gold.

Ya, people dont really lay about on our beaches...its rocky and cold so had hoped for some interesting wash up coins or maybe relics from the extensive loggin and boat building that used to happen here. No spring break or resort action along witch the associated modern gold. So perhaps these are just poor beaches to work on.

Yes, no disc at all, tried various low and high sens settings, and dig anything that is not iron or ferrous eddy current faking as silver etc. getting better at that part. i usually use mode 1 on the 305 w. all disc slots turned back on (randy technique), but perhaps i should try all metal mode too....or just look for better locations :). Lots of history here, old japanese villages and farms (gotta get permission from owners so working on that) and old military/logging towns.

As for skillful, perhaps only that i apply myself thoroughly and am willing to work hard and listen to the experts! Definitely not anywhere near to 'skilled' yet :)

Great advice, pls keep it coming! TY very much.

Roger, I live not to far from you, North of Seattle. I have found the local fresh water lakes to be better finds then the rocky beaches, just my opinion. Gerry

You're never going to find coins washing up on a beach in the protected waters of puget sound, you need big swell and short period, which will not happen on the west side of the sound, and not even likely on the east. Add to that the fact that beach traffic on bainbridge will be almost non existent, and your drops will be few and far between. I would say take a trip out to the outer coast when a good storm hits and washes away some sand, you might find some interesting stuff, or like Gerry said, hit the fresh water places that people go swimming.

Young Man,
The guys are right. Our water here in the Puget Sound area too cold for swimming
and not much beach activity, short summer, when we have one. Get a water proof
machine and hit the lakes. I live east of Lake Washington and use three pi machines
and hunt the lakes. Snorkel and dive. Good luck to you.

i also thought the pacific northwest beaches have high iron content--black sand.......if so your depth will be greatly diminished....

Great advice from all of you! Thanks very much.

Guess i really AM hunting in the wrong places...NW guys-what about some of the parks in the city? i know the state parks are highly restricted--what about the 'not state' parks in these parts. on the island, i have not done too well there either.

i will try the lakes....anything else fairly local to me that might be good practice hunting?

thanks again!

Research, Research, Research..old maps. pictures, post cards, seniors homes, google old swimming holes, library ..lots of sources out there, it takes alot of time. I have over 60 beach's and points of interest I've been researching for some time now here in the Chesapeake Bay, preparing for retirement in 2013, in-fact this year I have canceled all my time at the beach just to get ready..So you have to give it the time........And have the right Tools.

Man OBN..... cancelled all your beach hunts..... i think you are off your meds lol.

Roger,
All State Parks are not off limits. I'm not sure what State Parks are
near you, bt many here in our state are ok for dtecting. Contact
the ranger when yuget there and use good retrieval habits. Of
course, there is a ten dollar Discover charge, which is most
likely in effect year round. Schools, parks and if I were you, I
would get in to lake hunting. Good luck.

Yep, it's going to be tuff..but I need to get everything in order, and be able to hunt year round like the lucky Florida hunters........ Jet-ski Brian has a awesome setup...so that is were all my extra time is going to.....My theory, the boys up in the Northeast Kill the Gold in the winter {And Chicago Ron}, with the xtrem winter low-tides pulls, Soooo...drysuit, jet-ski. old private Beach's....

his setup for winter fishing

Off topic for the north west ... but heck ... LOL ...

Curses OBN!!

I am going to have to find some time to plunder the Magothy before you reach retirement and there is no more to be found going behind you! I do have one "private" pier I need to go to and look for a young lady's ring. Did not get there yet. I think it was this past October that I learned of the loss and have not made it there. If you go due east of your house until you hit RT 173, you are within a mile of where it was lost.
