Advice for a new Ace 250 owner

Hi all,
Well the decision was finally made! After over a year of looking 1st at a Whites MXT, then a Minelab X-terra 70, then a Tesoro Vaquero and a Cibola, I decided to get my local dealer's very 1st recommendation (for a newbie) the Ace 250 with the Pro package. I was all set to get the Whites, but I just couldn't justify the money. Hope I made the right choice.
Because I have some hearing loss in my right ear, I also got a pair of Sun Ray Pro Gold headphones because I need the limiter switch and dual volume controls.
I plan to do coin & jewelry hunting and some fresh water beach hunting in Michigan.
Any and all advice is appreciated. These forums are such a great resource.
Thanks much and HH.

Man, you wont be sorry, I love my Ace 250!!! Its super easy to use, and the price/options is what got me too. Here in a few hours, you are going to get a lot of people telling you that you made a great decision!!!:garrett:

Good, solid choice. I get the sense that you will be a casual user, a "fun and fresh air" type. If so, the Garrett is just the ticket to get you started. If you end up not liking the hobyy, then you can sell it readily without much loss.

For a few pointers on the detector itself, have a read of this:

And for how to put your new instrument to good use, have a read of this one:

I have the Ace 250 and a Bounty Hunter Lone Star. And I use the Ace over the BH every time leaving the BH to the wife to use . You will love the Ace no doubt. Several here in these forums will tell the same thing till you get used to the sounds, "dig everything" at first . Go out in the yard and practice. Seed some items that you know you will be looking for ,plus some you know your not interested in so you can learn the sounds and where they show on the dial. The Ace is very good at predicting and pin pointing but it takes practice to know what the machine is finding. Good luck

You were given great advise to buy the Ace as a first detector. before you go out for your first hunt, it's a very good idea to practice at home so that you have some idea as to what to do when you go out with it. Start by getting 1 of each coin, and after turning on the detector, to check the ground for other bits of metal, put the coins on the ground to see where they show up on the meter. Mostly, they will show up in the same notch. Look at scale above screen for reference. Rubbish targets will bounce around all over the place.
practice pinpointing these coins. There are 3 methods of doing this, but for the moment, using the shallow method. It's the easiest and most popular method to master. With the coin on the ground, place the detector on the ground. Now hit and hold the pinpoint button and move the coil over the coin. Watching the ground and listening to the pinpoint tone, slide the coil till you have the coil over the of the coil. Slide the coil back toward yourself till you lose the tone. This happens when the inner coil passes over the target. Wiggling the coil around a bit will help to get the drop off happening at the 12 o'clock position. Getting it to drop of at this point consistently, is key to making easy recoveries.
Good luck with the Ace. Just remember that it's going to take a bit of time to get used to using it, so you will feel a bit of frustration at first. I'm going though that at the moment, as I've just bought the GTI 1500. It's all good and soon you will have trouble putting it down. BTW. You want have to worry about the Ace being too quiet. It's quite easy to hear.

Wow! What great advice. Thanks very much. I'm going to follow through with all your advice before I hit the tot lots, playgrounds, & beaches. I'm sure to be much better prepared thanks to all of you. My big challenge will be ....patience. Realizing it takes time to learn this and any machine.
Thanks again.

That's a great price. I just paid 212.00. It also came with headphones, book, digging tool, log book and pouch. So you did very good.
The Ace is easy to use and if it reads it's a dime, nickel, quarter, penny it is very accurate. Have fun.

good, im excited! I got it on ebay with like 30 seconds left so I bid on it and won. I hear it can be difficult to pinpoint with. Any tips?

pinpointing was a problem for me at first....pretty good at it now but I still have my" moving targets."
Start a coin garden!!!! Nothing will shorten your learning curve like the knowledge you get from sweeping a known target and learning how your machine responds.
Study up on learning how to "de-tune" your coil.
I have had my 250 since November and learned how to de-tune soon after struggling with the pinpointing part of the hunt.
I can honestly say I de-tune l00 percent of my targets now.
Not de-tuning with the ace is like shooting a rifle without using your sights.

I just bought the Ace 250 recently after reading many opinions and posts. I don't think it can be beat for the price, even if you paid full price! I went with the Sports pack also, got it locally from the "little guy" for 275.00, I'm happy!

it means shrinking the signal down to one isolated part of your coil.
I am a disaster in explanations but do a bit of search on this site and you will find the video (I believe khouse) created for u-tube in pinpointing and detuning'

I cant wait to get it and try it out! How do you detune the ace 250? I have dial up so I cant watch movies worth a crap. Its good to support your local retailers, and you have a place you can take it for service if you need to.

here is a quick explanation on the de-tuning process.
Get a coin and stick it into the ground. Mark the spot with something so it is visible to you.
Using the standard coil push and hold the pinpoint button down and move the coil away from you towards the target. You will notice the signal gauge climbing as the coil goes over the target. As you pass the target the gauge will start to decrease in strength. This is when you release the pinpoint button and quickly push it twice..holding it in on the second push.
Bring the coil back towards you over the target and you will notice that when the inner ring of the coil at the twelve o'clock position passes over the target the sound of your Ace will suddenly stop.
Your target will then be directly in between the inner and outer ring at the top of your coil.
having a coin garden handy to practise with will be a great way to shorten your learning curve.
