advantages of full ferous rejection in iron mask m

yes would like to know if there are any advantages in using the iron mask mode with complets ferrous rejection(set on 0) thanks for the info a fellow ther in wisc.

Well for starters you shouldn't find any ferrous targets ... or older deeper coins ... or smaller gold items. I usually run iron mask -12 because many deeper coins will read high but on the ferrous side of the screen. I think this is due to several factors, the depth (weaker signals not being as accurate), ferrous targets nearby, soil mineralization and even targets that are not directly under your coil sweep (off center). I guess if you were in a site with lots of iron I might go to iron mask 0 but I would do so knowing full well that I would be missing some good targets as well. Iron mask used wisely will help you recover more good targets, used wrong you will actually recover less. As a rule of thumb I use the least amount of iron mask that my patience will allow, some days I am just more patient than others. Good luck!

Hi Nimrod,
I read your post with interest. Re Iron Mask mode it seems like all of the "pro" detectorists use it. I started out with an open rectangle in the upper-right corner of the SmartScreen. Posts like yours and other experts have convinced me to run in Iron Mask (-:geek: and due to it much more noisy nature than I'm used to, I'm just starting to get used to it.
I went back over some of the most productive of a park that I hit last year with the open rectangle (I pulled a good amount of silver out of there last year with this set up). Well the bottom line is that I didn't find *any* deeper coins that I'd missed. I did pull one or two coins that were under junk that I dug due to the wider open screen, but I was *very* surprised not to all those deeper iron masked coins. Our soil is pretty mineralized here in northern NJ and there was a fair amount of trash (usual pull tabs, crown caps, etc.) in the park as well.
So my question is: Is Iron Mask overrated?

NO!

Are you digging any targets that are not hitting where there normally hit?The majority of my silver dimes hit anywhere in between the two boxes on this screen.I use iron mask -10 and this screen.I run iron mask and then if I get an iffy I switch back and forth to this screen to check it.If it is a clean area,I use this one.
If you are using iron mask, but still only digging the targets that read in the upper right, then it will not make a difference. But if you have the open screen dig anything that sounds good.Go by your ears, not what the screen says.If it sounds good,it usually is.You will dig some nails, but you will dig alot of silver that you would never think would read where they do.

...with what Ric said in his post. The one thing I would add is that as you discovered with using a low iron mask setting in a high trash area you will be able to pick out a few extra coins. But, you still may not get more of the deeper coins in a high trash area because the weak, scratchy signals will still get over powered by all the trash signals. So until you learn to become extremely patient, go extremely slow and really get to know your machine then lowering the iron mask setting may not automatically start getting the deep coins in high trash areas for you. In low trash to clean areas you should start nailing more deep ones pretty quickly though. Pretty much what I do is just dig any repeatable signals that are over 4 inches deep and are anywhere near the top 1/3 of the screen. Good luck!

I couldn't help but notice the screen shot you posted. Obviously you don't hunt with autosense 1 but is that the discrimination pattern you use? If so, what objects did you use to create (teach) this pattern? After studying your pattern I concluded that most of my trash targets would probably fall under your disc'ed out areas so I'm thinking about creating a similar pattern.

That pattern is what alot of the English guys use.All you do is go into select screen and clear the screen, then check off bottle caps and nails. The nails checked blacks out the tiny upper left corner and the bottle cap checked blacks out the lower right, but I would like to change that to just the very lower right corner, just haven't yet.I have dug some small lead that would be disced out using bottle cap reject. For me,at least in this soil, bottle caps always hit the very lower right corner of the screen like a clad quarter hits the very high right corner.I have dug bottle caps that bounced around, but the majority hit there.
I have this pattern on all the time, but usually leave iron mask -10 on,and then switch over to that screen to check targets that want to bounch over hard left.It seems that on this screen they will lock on the left side better.I do switch to this screen when I get into cleaner areas.I should use it more than I do,though.I have dug 28 gauge brass that have been over the edge on the left about 2/3rds the way down the screen,so it is hard to tell what I miss in iron mask -10.
IMO it is a good screen,I think it would be real useful relic hunting, but I would probably only check nails and not bottlecaps for that.A good one to have saved.I have a bunch of coin patterns saved, but I only use this one and iron mask.I finally got to where all the signals don't drive me nutty anymore. Now it is music to my ears.

I went back to a small area that I had hunted a year ago before I learned to slow down and use Iron Mask extensively. I was amazed at how many more coins I found. Even though they were not all old, I did find a mercury dime, indian, 3 wheats, 9 memorials, 3 clad dimes and a 1913 dog tag. Jim's technique of using ferrous sounds really helps me here as we have a lot of coal ashes with clinkers buried in the soil. This area was about 12x40 ft. Thanks Jim.
