Advantage does it again

Got out for a spot of detecting a couple of weekends back in central Victoria (Australia.) Found two old tokens on the edge of some old gold diggings with the Advantage fitted with the standard 8 inch coil. The first coin was dated 1855 (photos 3 and 4.) The second coin was not dated, but I did a bit of research and found it had been minted in 1849 (photos 1 and 2.) There was a severe shortage of government coins in the early days of Australia, especially leading into the gold rush, so traders had there own coins minted for trading.

Later on that day I found an 1865 penny on the edge of another digging (photos 5 and 6.) It was located with the 15 inch WOT. All coins were located at a depth of around 4 inches.

Have a great new year one and all. Happy hunting in 2009.

Congrats on those sweet old coins. I really enjoy seeing the coins from another country, great hunt, Beale.

Beautiful finds Mick,
I wish we had some really old areas in South Australia to hunt for the old pre-decimals. I get a bit sick of digging $1.00 and $2.00 coins!

Thanks Gary,
I wish I could I find a few more pennys and others when I hunt, but these damned tokens keep popping up. But I guess, that's what the diggers were using back in those days. I have another token from the mid 1850's currently soaking in olive oil. Once it's cleaned up, I'll pop it on the forum.
