Additional battery thoughts for Mr. Squid

It was good to see some excellent posts on the battery debate. Nice to have my comment vindicated by Mr. Gifford himself also! As for the 9V or 8xAA saga? well here's my experience of using both.
My trusty Silver Sabre 2 run on 2x 9v and I got a lot of mileage out of those batteries, but when they faded, they faded fast! the first thing you knew that they were shot was when your detector started making wierd squeaky noises! when that happened you new that it was 'Game Over' unless you were carrying a spare set in your pocket
The thing I like about the Hawkeye is that you have a pretty accurate battery meter on the screen. It uses 8xAA cells, and they are good for at least 20 hours detecting. I let them get down to 3 blocks on the screen, then I dump a fresh set in. The cool thing with the AA cells is that over here at least, you can get some real good deals on them. My local supermarket was doing an 8 for the price of 4 deal, so I snapped up 12 packs More recently, another supermarket was doing a pack of 20 for

Good comments! As per your DeLeon/Tejon comparison...I have used the Cortes and the Tejon. They both had strong points. I didnt like hunting with the Cortes without GB in the Disc mode. I had a lot of falsing here in our soil. But it was nice to have the info in front of you, like you have with your Hawkeye. I didnt see a tremendous difference in depth between it and the Tejon, but I might not have used either in a "just right" setting where their bright points shone strong. The Tejon does have a battery meter of sorts too. When you turn the detector on, you hear a series of beeps. I cant remember, but I think it was 5-6 short beeps for a full strenght battery pack, and as it wore down the number of beeps would diminish. I found it to be very effective.
I can appreciate your battery buying adventures. Last year for Christmas, Santa brought me a pack of Costco(a regional shopping club) AA alkaline batteries. I think there were 20 in a pack. They lasted for quite a while until everyone found my stash, where they were quickly snapped up for walkmans, flashlights and various other non-metal detecting duties. Unfortunatley, Santas membership expired, so he had to fall back on his old stand-by...Hemmings Motor News.
Thanks for the post Charlie, and good luck with your decision!

Thanks for the reply Mr.Squid. Tell me, are you the only person on this forum who has used a Tejon? or do you think the rest of the guys / gals are just really shy? Thanks for letting me know about the audio battery check on the Tejon, I didn't know about that... the adverts don't make any mention of it. Do you guys make any use of the dual discrimination on the Tejon?
Take care ya'll

I dont know the answer to the first question. I've posted questions before, where a lot of people have looked at it, but no one answers. Maybe they just dont care, or think someone is gonna nail them for giving their opinion. I have shied away sometimes because I have so little experience compared to the big guns like Ralph and Monte. I answered because I've used one similar to what you have, and the one you want to get.
The dual disc feature was ok. Nothing that special for me. I would set #1 just below foil and #2 just above tabs(or just above nickels) if I were just looking for coins. Most of the time I could figure out what it was just by the sound and the loudness.
Cheerio!
