acid test pass plat. 18kt????

New member
Just was wondering if any other metals can pass platinum and 18kt test acid and be fake?

If you have an metal that does not fizz or bubble when exposed to Platinum/18k testing acid you got something good. However some nickle tungsten mixes can be very acid resistant. It would have to be made very recent from my understanding to be composed of this combination.

And, as always it could be plated, you will have to go off of heft or do a specific gravity test.

How about a picture?

ok, I am a jeweler and i filed the crap out of it and it still is good, not plated. It might be nickel, was not magnetic. I will get a pic asap. I have a s.g. test kit as well. It might just be easier to x-ray assay since my refiner does it free.
Thnx much
Eric

here are pics, I filed the heck out of the back, it is not plated, I probably let a refiner in NYC do an x-ray assay tomorrow, I'm expecting the worst!!!!

I would have to say that is the real thing. If you have filed it and have good acid than you scored. How heavy is it? Nickle will stain green quick with 18k testing acid.

being I am a jeweler, my only debate is that it is pretty hard to file, compared to other white metals. I know there is a lot of cheap metals now going into dental work these days, cobalt and chromium, (my wife is a dentist, I get her scrap too) I will report back with the official x-ray findings in a day or two. I know it looks good. The story so you know, (I know caveat emptor too) ...on Craigslist this person and older gent, had for the longest time (3-4 months no one bit) this tray of goods his deceased father had found over the years md'ing.... some items were thrown in from yard sale too. I knew nothing really was in it for $40.00 but I took a chance, there were some old coins pennies and V nickels as well as buffalo nickels. the 1909 penny caught my eye as did that ring. A nice little old USA pocket knife yellowish bakelite and 2 steel blades (from the 50's I 'd say) any way.... I dropped the tray while looking at it and I said, I broke it I bought it..... The end. I have done well lately that worst case I lbreak even, which is not bad due to some great finds.... 2-3 of old boy scout scarf holders and weblows etc..there was a fat .925 marked gents bracelet but it was clad. that threw me a little bit. I smell the metals and can tell mostly if it does not have an odor it's probably real. When it smells like metal, it's junk:wiggle:

Could be Stainless Steel if its really hard and the fact that an acid test on it doesn't bubble? Lots of Stainless steel rings out there...I sure hope its a good Plat ! Mud

There certainly is acid resistance metals, some worthless. Last year a friend presented me with a metal rock looking item found on a beach decades ago. Specific gravity test matched platinum, electronic metal tester showed platinum also, as did the acid test. Thinking platinum and nearly 3/4 of a pound and a nice value, I met a metallurgist which offered to test with scientific equipment that shows each mineral in the makeup. Well, low and behold, what the test showed was chromium by product with some other low percentage metals. So, never never use one test ad conclusive. However, if in the form of jewelry, the acid test and surely the electronic tester ate accurate. Hope this helps.

Thanks, It seems to be stainless steel, however,I can file it?? I guess it was not hardened. One refiner looked at it and said palladium, 2 others said stainless???
I will try to melt it to see what happens then. I didn't have time for x-ray, I will on Thursday or Friday

Eric

he didn't buy palladium, i would have lol

Sayvor, to me smells like metal... Surely could be silver. I smell metal all the time too. Some people say I'm crazy, others who know kinda give a nod. Also, after looking at the ring, it surely looks like a home craft novice with a file. I'd guess stainless pipe ring. HH

Its my file work. To test with acid. I filed clean surface. I smelled it to but it doesnt have That odor. It must be soft stainlesd. Non magnetic
I dont know why plat acid doesnt disapear?

IT'S, 58% Cobalt, 7% copper and the rest nickle. I had it x-ray assay'd Now I know.
