Ace Coil on the GTP - anyone else try it?

Was sorting through a bunch of older stuff and found my 9 x 12 coil that I got for the Ace 250. The machine itself has since been gifted to a family member but out of curiosity, I decided to try it on my GTP1350 - Low and behold I was surprised if it didn't work like a charm! Air tested a fishscale at 6" with Sens set to 6! That's pretty good! Looking forward to trying it out on a few sports fields for starters. I never used this coil much with the Ace since it was very nose heavy and hard on the wrists but on the GTP balance is just fine! Just breathed new life into the old machine! Anybody else try this?

I have never tried it but they may well be "somewhat" interchangeable and I doubt that any harm is done by interchanging.

Both detectors/coils have the same connector pin outs but are not tuned to run at the same frequencies.

Garrett part numbers for identical size Pro-formance GTP and ACE 250 coils are different.

The Ace 250 runs at 6.5 khz, the GTP runs at 7.2 khz. Not a huge frequency difference but a tuning mismatch if coils are interchanged.

Quite a number of years ago I was about to purchase a GTP DD coil for my Ace 250 and a dealer told me it wouldn't work. He didn't say why it wouldn't work but didn't pursue it. Based on the cost of that DD it wasn't worth experimenting.

I have an older Sunray YF-1 pin pointer (probe) which is compatible with the ACE, GTP, & GTI but there is a capacitor that is swiched in/out depending on the detector (ACE or GTP/GTI) to compensated for "some" difference in the detectors.

I know that going the other way probably wouldn't work well since the Ace has a fixed ground bias in its circuits so a coil tuned for the GTP would definitely result in a mismatch. However going the other way putting a coil tuned for the Ace onto the GTP would likely work as I demonstrated only because the GTP has an auto tracking ground balance which likely is compensating for the difference in tuned frequency.

Anyways I will give it a go and keep the forum posted. Might be a week or two since the weather has just turned crappy again.
Thanks for your comments Frank - Stay tuned!
